VTF Capital Research
Investment Thesis
VTF Capital (formerly VegasTechFund) is a specialized early-stage venture capital firm focused exclusively on the future of commerce. Founded with deep roots in Zappos culture, the firm invests in commerce technology, digital brands, and pre-consumer logistics companies. They believe that the barriers to creating real things are lower than ever, and they want to help build lasting companies that redefine how people interact with commerce for the next 100 years.
The firm is operationally-focused, priding themselves on providing more than just capital. They bring extensive experience and networks, working tirelessly in the trenches with portfolio companies. They only invest in companies they would want to work for, emphasizing a hands-on approach to value creation.
Sector Focus
VTF Capital invests across three primary commerce-focused verticals:
Vertical Commerce: Digital-first, vertically-integrated, first-party merchants that leverage technology to manufacture and market goods more efficiently. These companies define product categories, produce goods at efficient scale, have deep purpose beyond making sales, and use complex systems and data analysis to build lasting businesses.
Physical Commerce: Companies building innovative technology for physical retail experiences. This includes technologies that enhance physical shopping, enable more efficient use of physical spaces for in-person and digital commerce, and simplify logistics linking manufacturer, retailer, and consumer.
Commerce Infrastructure: Technology products and services that enable greater access and efficiency in commerce. These companies build tools to help retail companies operate more efficiently, leveraging technology innovation to make commerce simpler, more intelligent, and more secure.
They also make occasional "Atypical" investments outside their core commerce thesis when compelling opportunities arise.
Stage Focus
VTF Capital is exclusively an early-stage investor, focusing on:
- Pre-seed: Initial investments in companies with MVPs and early traction
- Seed: Primary focus area for new investments
They explicitly state that if a company has raised more than $2 million, they are likely too late for VTF Capital.
Check Size
- Initial Investment: $200,000 - $1,000,000 (homepage states $300K-$2M over company lifetime)
- Total Lifetime: Up to $2,000,000 per company
- Fund Size: $48M assets under management
They sometimes lead investments but don't require it, maintaining flexibility in deal structure.
Recent Activity
Based on their portfolio and investment patterns, VTF Capital continues to actively deploy capital from their fund. Their recent investments span vertical commerce brands, commerce infrastructure platforms, and physical retail technology. The firm maintains a portfolio of 70+ companies across their three focus areas.

Decision Process
Partnership-based decision making with the investment team. Given their Zappos heritage and culture-focused approach, they emphasize cultural fit and founder quality alongside business metrics.
Founder Preferences
They seek founders who:
- Have technically-minded team members or co-founders (tech in DNA)
- View their products as solving deep-rooted problems, not just making sales
- Have produced and sold usable MVPs (for physical products)
- Have unique technical advantages or complete supply chain ownership
- Are building companies with long-term vision (100-year companies)
- Focus on revenue-positive unit economics
Geographic Focus
While based in Las Vegas, VTF Capital invests nationally across the US and selectively internationally. Only ~10% of their investments are Las Vegas-based, with 75% located elsewhere. They're committed to supporting Las Vegas's ecosystem while investing in the best commerce opportunities regardless of location.
Anti-Thesis
They explicitly do NOT invest in:
- Companies directly or indirectly focused on gambling, gaming, or nightlife entertainment
- Physical product companies that haven't produced and sold a usable MVP (they refer these to Dragon Innovation)
- Companies lacking technically-minded team members or co-founders
- Companies that have raised more than $2M (too late stage)
Unique Differentiators
- Deep Zappos Heritage: Team's experience at Zappos provides unique insights into e-commerce, customer experience, and company culture
- Operational Focus: They work in the trenches with companies, not just providing capital
- Commerce Specialization: Focused exclusively on commerce across three defined verticals
- Long-term Perspective: Thinking about 100-year companies, not quick flips
- Culture-Driven: Only invest in companies they'd want to work for
