ABB Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
ABB Ventures, formerly ABB Technology Ventures (ATV), is the business-led strategic venture capital framework of the ABB Group. It invests in breakthrough startups aligned with ABB's goal of writing the future of industrial electrification and automation. Founded in 2009, it offers portfolio companies access to ABB's R&D bench, domain expertise, global customer and channel access, and more than four decades of industrial hardware experience. From the outset, the team acts as a bridge between the startup and the relevant ABB business units, so commercial pilots and customer introductions are a core part of the pitch alongside capital.
Structure
The program runs through business-aligned arms. ABB Electrification Ventures targets smart, sustainable energy in industry, e-mobility, smart cities, and power distribution, and reports more than $110 million invested across roughly 16 to 18 companies since 2021. ABB Motion Ventures, launched in March 2024, backs startups tied to drives, motors, powertrains, sustainability, and resource efficiency. The site also lists Robotics and Process Automation arms (RA and PA Ventures) and a Corporate bucket. This is a corporate VC, so ABB business units sponsor and select deals and a strategic fit with ABB matters as much as financial return.
Stage Focus
Typical stage is Series A and Series B. The firm says it makes 5+ new investments per year and has made 60+ direct investments since 2010, plus 8 fund investments. Earlier-stage startups are steered toward SynerLeap, ABB's innovation hub, which drives paid pilots and proofs of concept and positions startups for later ATV backing.
Check Size
The typical initial check is $2-5M for a 5-20% ownership stake. Total deployed capital is cited at about $500M to date (older third-party sources say about $400M). This is capital invested, not assets under management, so AUM is left unset.
Lead Tendency
Mixed. ABB Electrification Ventures led Gridcog's $10M Series A in 2026, while in Oktogrid's EUR 4M round in 2026 the round was led by Elewit. As a strategic investor it often joins syndicates alongside financial leads.
Recent Activity
- Gridcog (energy modeling software), $10M Series A, July 2026, led by ABB Electrification Ventures.
- Oktogrid (electrical infrastructure condition monitoring), EUR 4M round led by Elewit with ABB participating, 2026.
- ABB Startup Challenge 2026 finals held in Bilbao, Spain, April 15-16, 2026, with 18 finalists. Winners receive up to $30,000 in equity-free co-development funding.
- Recent portfolio adds on the site include DG Matrix, UptimeAI, Molg, OctaiPipe, and Direct Energy Partners.
Fund status looks actively deploying, with new investments appearing through mid-2026.

Names include DG Matrix, Natron Energy, Gridbeyond, LevelTen Energy, Samotics, Sevensense, Scalable Robotics, Automata, Hailo, Everactive, CMR Surgical, ChargeLab, and Morrow Batteries. Decision Process
Deals run through ABB business-unit sponsorship and ventures team review, which is closer to a corporate investment committee than a solo GP. Timelines are not published. Expect a strategic commercial test (pilot, customer access) before or alongside a term sheet.
Founder Preferences
Founders with deployable industrial technology: hardware, sensors, power electronics, or software that runs on industrial and utility assets. The firm wants startups that can use ABB's customers and channels, and that benefit from validation in live industrial environments. Pure consumer or non-industrial software is outside the lens.
Geographic Focus
Global. The portfolio spans North America, Europe (Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Germany, UK, Netherlands, Israel), and Asia (China, India). The ventures team is Zurich-based with ABB's global footprint behind it.
