Abingworth Research
Investment Thesis
Abingworth is a transatlantic life sciences investment firm. Its stated aim is to work with entrepreneurs to turn breakthrough science into breakthrough medicine. The firm made its first biotech investment in 1987 and says it has backed more than 200 life science companies since. It looks for treatments that would materially improve patients' lives, meaning paradigm shifts rather than incremental improvements. Target sectors are biotherapeutics, small molecules, nucleic acid therapeutics, vaccines, gene therapies, cell therapies, specialty pharma and platform technologies. This is a therapeutics firm, not a generalist: the portfolio page counts 111 therapeutics companies and 19 in other categories.
Stage Focus
Abingworth runs three strategies. Seed and Early Stage venture investing is the historical core (115 venture investments on its portfolio page). Development Stage covers later private and public companies, including VIPEs (Venture Investments in Public Equities), 13 of which are listed. Clinical Co-Development (CCD) is non-dilutive, asset-based financing for pivotal-stage programs, often alongside large pharma; the page lists 19 CCD deals, such as a deal closed in Q2 2026 with up to $200M for a Phase 3 prostate cancer program. Startups, clinical-stage private companies, public biotechs and established pharma programs are all in scope.
Check Size
The strategy page gives a typical investment of $15M to $30M in total per company, with a holding period of 3 to 8 years. CCD tickets can be larger, up to roughly $200M per program. Note this is a total commitment across rounds, not an initial check, so it is not a fit for a small pre-seed cheque.
Lead Tendency
Abingworth both leads and co-leads. It co-led the GBP 90M Myricx Bio Series A in 2024, co-led R1 Therapeutics' 2026 Series A, and co-led AdvanCell financings. It also participates in syndicates (for example the AdvanCell $315M Series D in July 2026 and Cytospire's Series A led by 4BIO Capital). It typically takes board seats and an active role in company building.
Recent Activity
The media page shows steady 2025 and 2026 activity. R1 Therapeutics launched with a $77.5M Series A (March 2026). Cytospire closed a GBP 61M ($83M) Series A (May 2026). cAMPfield launched with a $180M Series A (June 2026). Allotera (formerly Wugen) closed $35M (July 2026) after a $115M raise in August 2025. AdvanCell closed a $315M Series D (July 2026). Redx closed a $36M Series A (August 2026). Earlier: Antares launched with $177M (June 2025), Glycomine raised $115M Series C (April 2025), Atsena raised $150M (April 2025), Timberlyne launched with $180M (January 2025), Iambic raised over $100M (November 2025), Solve Therapeutics raised $120M (November 2025) and Addition Therapeutics announced $100M (December 2025). The firm reports all of its funds as actively investing.

Decision Process
The firm decides as a partnership with investment committees per strategy (venture, development stage, CCD). Fund sizes are large: Abingworth Bioventures 8 raised $466M, CCD Fund 2 raised $466M and the CCD Co-Investment Fund raised $356M. The firm has 15 life science funds in total and is affiliated with Carlyle. Warm introductions and scientific credibility matter in a field this specialised, though this was not stated on the site.
Founder Preferences
Abingworth backs scientist-entrepreneurs and experienced biopharma teams with differentiated science and a path to clinical proof of concept. It offers help with recruiting leadership teams and boards, selecting drug targets for novel platforms, corporate development strategy, clinical development plans and legal issues. It leans on a network of scientific and industry advisors. It is not a fit for software, consumer or non-life-science startups.
Geographic Focus
Primarily the US and Europe. The portfolio page counts 100 US and 48 European companies. Companies span Boston, San Francisco and San Diego, London, Dublin, Denmark, Australia and Germany.
