AN Venture Partners Research
Investment Thesis
AN Venture Partners (ANV) is a Tokyo- and San Francisco-based venture capital firm founded in 2022 with a single, focused mission: to bridge innovative biotech science originating in Japan with the US start-up ecosystem, and to build "blockbuster" global biotech companies around it. The firm was established by a group of experienced Japanese and American venture capitalists and operates in formal alliance with ARCH Venture Partners, one of the top-ranked life science VCs in the US (ranked #1 in the 2026 Stanford Biotech Venture Ranking). ANV's core belief, stated publicly by Managing Partner Ken Horne, is that "Japan represents an untapped source for innovative science" that has historically lacked the capital, company-building expertise, and global commercial network needed to reach patients. ANV positions itself as that missing bridge: sourcing technology and academic discoveries from Japan, then building and capitalizing US-style biotech companies (often headquartered in Boston/Cambridge or the Bay Area) around them, frequently syndicating with top-tier US life science investors.
Sector Focus
ANV invests exclusively in biotech and life sciences. It is explicitly modality- and disease-agnostic — its seven-to-eight company portfolio spans RNAi therapeutics, RNA-based in vivo gene insertion/gene therapy, cardiometabolic small molecules, mitophagy-targeting small molecules, and neurology/neuropsychiatric disease programs. There is no software, digital health, or non-biotech activity in the portfolio.
Stage Focus
ANV invests across the full biotech company lifecycle: pre-seed, seed, seed-plus, Series A, Series B, and Series C, and states it will invest "all the way through to sale, merger or IPO." In practice, recent activity shows the firm both leading early rounds (Series A, seed) for de novo Japan-sourced company creation and participating as a syndicate co-investor in larger Series B growth rounds for existing portfolio companies.
Check Size
ANV has not publicly disclosed a fixed check-size range. Its $200M Fund I supports investments of varying size depending on stage — from early company-creation checks to participation in syndicated rounds of $100M+ alongside large US crossover and specialist life-science investors (e.g., RA Capital Management, Frazier Life Sciences, Novo Holdings, Wellington Management).
Lead Tendency
Mixed. ANV has led Series A rounds for companies it helped create from Japanese science (e.g., Typewriter Therapeutics' $56M Series A) and led earlier Tortugas Neuroscience and Pillar Therapeutics rounds, while acting as a co-investor/existing-investor participant in later-stage syndicated rounds for portfolio companies such as Crystalys Therapeutics and City Therapeutics.
Recent Activity
ANV closed its debut fund, ANV Fund I, at $200M in June 2025 — one of the largest Japan-focused biotech VC funds raised to date, backed by over 20 LPs including Japan Investment Corporation, Shionogi & Co., Otsuka Pharmaceutical, MUFG Bank, and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation. The firm made its first investment in December 2023 and has been actively deploying since, with multiple new and follow-on rounds in 2025-2026, most recently leading Typewriter Therapeutics' $56M Series A (September 2026) and participating in Crystalys Therapeutics' oversubscribed $130M Series B (mid-2026). ANV is also active in ecosystem-building: it is officially certified as a venture capital firm by Japan's AMED (Agency for Medical Research and Development), participates in AMED's new Boston office launch and V-eco funding initiatives, and its partners regularly appear on industry panels (e.g., IVS 2026 in Kyoto) discussing how to scale Japan-origin biotech globally.
Portfolio Highlights
ANV's portfolio consists of 7-8 companies, all biotech: Typewriter Therapeutics (RNA-based, non-viral in vivo gene insertion using R2 retrotransposon technology, led by ANV), Crystalys Therapeutics (URAT1 inhibitor dotinurad for gout, Phase 3), City Therapeutics (next-generation RNAi therapeutics, founded by RNAi pioneer John Maraganore, former Alnylam CEO), Imbria Pharmaceuticals (cardiometabolic disease therapeutics), Tortugas Neuroscience (neurology/neuropsychiatric disease therapeutics, launched with $106M), PAhR Therapeutics (pulmonary arterial hypertension), Capacity Bio (first-in-class mitophagy therapeutic platform, LA-based), and Pillar Therapeutics (reported seed investment). None have exited (IPO/M&A) yet as of this research; several are in Phase 2/3 clinical trials.

Decision Process
ANV operates as a multi-partner partnership (at least four investing partners: Horne, Nowacek, Futami, Hashimoto) rather than a solo-GP structure, consistent with its dual Japan/US team and cross-border sourcing model.
Founder Preferences
ANV backs both academic-founder company creation (building teams and hiring experienced US biopharma executives around Japan-origin science, as with Typewriter Therapeutics' CEO ex-Moderna, CSO ex-BMS) and experienced biotech management teams already running clinical-stage programs (Crystalys, City Therapeutics, Imbria). A recurring pattern is Japan-sourced core science paired with veteran US biopharma operating leadership.
Geographic Focus
Dual-hub: Tokyo, Japan and San Francisco, California, with portfolio companies concentrated in the US Northeast biotech clusters (Boston/Cambridge, Framingham) and San Diego, alongside Japan-origin science and academic partnerships (e.g., Tohoku University). ANV is explicitly aligned with Japan's national policy goal of becoming a global biotech leader by 2030.
