Avaana Capital Research

Investment Thesis

Avaana Capital is a deep tech and climate venture firm based in Mumbai with a second office in Bengaluru. Its stated mission is to back visionary founders who use frontier innovation to build globally competitive solutions for India and the world. The firm pairs capital with domain insight, business-building support and ecosystem connectivity, which it describes as its whole-team model.

Sector Focus

Avaana organizes its work around four investment themes: Energy, Supply Chains, Advanced Materials, and Agriculture and Food Systems. Across those themes it names energy, mobility and supply chains, precision manufacturing, agriculture and food systems, nanotechnology, robotics, advanced materials, AI and biotech. Portfolio examples include rooftop solar (Aerem), grid and off-grid battery storage (AmpereHour), low-speed electric two-wheelers (Alpha Vector), EV charging software (Kazam), biopolymers (Bacalt), mycelium biomaterials (Dharaksha), insect biotech (Green Grahi), precision fermentation (Phyx44), AI for fresh produce quality (Intello Labs), and electronics manufacturing (Mekr).

Stage Focus

The firm invests at seed and Series A. Early cheques are small and it leads rounds as companies scale, for example the Rs 67 crore Series A in Mekr in May 2026, led by Avaana with Titan Capital Winners Fund participating. It also follows on, as in Aerem's Series A and Series B.

Check Size

Anjali Bansal told Fortune India in April 2025 that average cheques run from Rs 1 crore to Rs 5 crore, roughly $120K to $600K at entry. A third-party profile says the newer fund can write $1-2M. Lead rounds such as Mekr are larger. Treat $120K to $2M as the working range.

Lead Tendency

Avaana both leads and follows. It led the Mekr Series A and has taken follow-on positions in companies such as Aerem.

Recent Activity

  • May 2026: led the Rs 67 crore (about $7M) Series A in Mekr Technologies.
  • January 2026: Aerem Series B ($15M per NFX Signal), following a $12M Series A in April 2025.
  • April 2026: launched the third Avaana and DPIIT Startup India Grand Challenge for deep tech, with a new Emerging Pioneers track for pre-incorporation researchers.
  • July 2026: Anjali Bansal published an opinion piece in Fortune India on deep tech and India's next growth chapter.
  • August 2026: three portfolio companies (Dreamfly, AmpereHour, Intello Labs) were recognized in the NASSCOM Emerge 50 awards.

The Avaana Climate and Sustainability Fund closed at $135M in 2024 after a $70M first close in June 2023. A Fortune India piece from April 2025 reported about a third of the fund was already deployed. The fund looks to be actively deploying.

Portfolio Highlights

The firm lists about 25 companies on its portfolio page: Aerem, Alpha Vector, AmpereHour, Bacalt, Carboledger, Dharaksha, Dheya Engineering, Dreamfly, Drivn, Eeki, Eggoz, Enlite, Equilibrium, Farmart, Green Grahi, High Time Foods, Intello Labs, Kazam, Level Five Cartronics, Mekr, Phyx44, Sentra World, Tsuyo, Turno and Wastelink. The firm reports 70+ patents filed, 36,000+ jobs created and 5 million tonnes of GHG emissions abated across the portfolio. No exits are listed on the site.

Team

  • Anjali Bansal, Founding Partner. Previously Non-Executive Chairperson of Dena Bank, appointed by the Government of India to steer its merger with Bank of Baroda.
  • The team page also lists Dr. Aastha Paliwal, Archit Bhargava, Kalpana Nimgaonkar, Kashmira Contractor, Nishi Bopanna, Param Bafna, Prasad Ghadi, Rahul Bhapkar, Rishubh Malpani, Samridhi Singh, Sandeep Singhal, Shreya Bhattacharjee, Shreyas Srinivas, Sparsh Kumar, Shruti Srivastava and Vikas Verma, without titles.
  • Advisors: Anami Roy and S. Ramadorai.

Decision Process

Avaana describes a whole-team model in which a multidisciplinary team supports each company. Anjali Bansal is the public face of the firm and likely central to decisions. The exact decision process and timeline are not published.

Founder Preferences

Deep tech founders solving hard problems in energy, materials, mobility, supply chains and food systems, with a path to global competitiveness from India. The firm runs the Grand Challenge, office hours with IIT Madras, and relationships with incubators and research labs, so it favours technically grounded teams, including research-stage founders.

Geographic Focus

India-first. Companies are Indian or have Indian operations, with the stated aim of building solutions for India and the world. Offices are in Mumbai and Bengaluru.

Value Beyond Capital

Four platforms: Technology (labs, incubators, institutes), Industry Linkage (pilots and go-to-market), Catalytic Capital (equity, debt and blended finance) and Policy and Academia (think tanks and government engagement).
