Ballast Point Partners Research
Investment Thesis
Ballast Point Partners (formerly Ballast Point Ventures, founded 2002 as "BPV") is a Tampa, Florida-based early growth equity investor that provides expansion capital to established, rapidly growing private companies. The firm's core belief is that great entrepreneurs build great businesses, so it targets founder-led companies with experienced, focused management teams, deep domain expertise, a proven business model, and a high level of integrity. BPP explicitly positions itself as a partner rather than a controlling owner: "We don't buy control of your business or tell you how to run it. We partner with you and decide together how to take your business to the next level." The firm has been investing together as a team for over 20 years and emphasizes that its full network and resources -- not just one deal partner -- are available to every portfolio company.
Sector Focus
Ballast Point Partners concentrates on three key industry sectors:
- Software (B2B SaaS across verticals such as sales acceleration, inventory/warehouse management, compliance, marketing performance, and clinical trial management)
- Tech-Enabled Services (payments and prepaid card programs, telecom identity/reputation management, managed cybersecurity, UCaaS/contact center, developer recruiting platforms, digital music distribution)
- Healthcare (digital health workflow automation, remote cardiac monitoring, retinal screening/telemedicine, dermatology services, regenerative medicine, contract biomanufacturing)
Stage Focus
BPP invests in later-stage growth equity rounds rather than early-stage venture. It looks for companies that are rapidly growing with $3-$20 million of run-rate revenue, have a proven business model, and serve a large national market. Several recent deals (e.g., Takt) are described as the company's "first institutional round," indicating BPP is often the first institutional capital a bootstrapped, revenue-generating company takes on.
Check Size
Ballast Point Partners makes initial equity investments ranging from $5 million to $15 million, targeting companies with a $5-$15 million capital need for growth capital and/or shareholder liquidity. The firm has raised over $550 million across four funds since 2002.
Lead Tendency
BPP typically leads or is the sole institutional investor in its transactions. It led Takt's $9.25M Series A (2026) and was the sole growth-capital investor in Work Shield's $6M raise. Partners routinely take board seats as part of the investment.
Recent Activity
Fund activity remains active as of 2026:

Decision Process
BPP operates as a true partnership: "Because we work as a team, the resources and network of the entire firm, not just one investment professional, are available to our entrepreneurs and their companies." Deal partners join company boards and remain the primary point of contact through the life of the investment.
Founder Preferences
BPP seeks outstanding, experienced management teams with deep domain expertise, a proven and scalable business model, a burning drive to succeed, and high integrity. Portfolio-company testimonials consistently emphasize that BPP does not seek control or attempt to run the business, and instead behaves as a hands-on but non-controlling partner that makes introductions, provides financial and operational expertise, and helps found teams avoid the "bait-and-switch" horror stories associated with some financial sponsors.
Geographic Focus
Ballast Point Partners has a particular emphasis on companies with a significant presence in Florida, the broader Southeast, and Texas, though its portfolio includes companies located more broadly across the U.S. (e.g., New York, Utah, Kentucky, Pennsylvania).
