BFG Partners Research
Investment Thesis
BFG Partners (formerly Boulder Food Group, founded 2014) is a Boulder, Colorado-based venture capital firm that invests early in consumer packaged goods and consumer products companies. The firm's tagline, "we back the brands you can't stop talking about," reflects a brand-first philosophy: they look for products with genuine shelf presence and cult-like consumer devotion rather than businesses that lead with marketing spend or logo recognition. BFG explicitly favors "category creators" -- brands that invent a new subcategory rather than fight for share of an existing aisle (OLIPOP creating functional prebiotic soda, Graza creating squeeze-bottle olive oil, MUD\WTR creating a coffee-alternative ritual). The partners are themselves former operators who built and sold consumer brands, and the firm markets "operator empathy" as a differentiator versus generalist consumer VCs.
Sector Focus
The firm's site lists six categories where it invests: Food, Beverage, Personal Care, Pet, Home, and Business Services. In practice the portfolio is dominated by food and beverage CPG brands, with personal care/beauty (Vacation sunscreen, Curlsmith hair care, ZitSticka skincare, Snif candles) and pet (Maev raw dog food) as secondary categories. "Business Services" picks up adjacent infrastructure for consumer brands themselves -- retention software (Stay Ai), receipt-based cashback (Aisle, and portfolio company Ibotta), and brand growth/distribution consultancies (Green Spoon Sales, Cartograph). BFG's public positioning is explicitly "better-for-you": products framed as healthier or more sustainable alternatives to legacy CPG (OLIPOP vs. soda, Caulipower vs. pizza, MALK vs. dairy/oat milk, BOBO's vs. candy bars).
Stage Focus & Check Size
BFG invests early-stage: its own "Pitch us" criteria ask for roughly $1M+ trailing-twelve-month net revenue (or clear line of sight to it), targeting early-stage and high-growth companies with proven traction ready to scale. Third-party CPG investor trackers put BFG's average first check around $4.5M within a $1M-$8M range, spanning Seed through Series A, with follow-on capacity for later rounds in strong performers (the firm has backed OLIPOP across multiple rounds from under $100K in revenue to a $500M+ business).
Fund Status
BFG activated its third fund at $125M in February 2024 (announced via Forbes, PR Newswire, and Global AgInvesting), after having raised roughly 70% of that target per trade coverage. Recent 2026 activity (a new Series A lead in portfolio company Stone & Skillet, continued press coverage of Graza and MALK product launches) indicates the fund remains actively deploying.
Lead Tendency
BFG has led or co-led multiple rounds across its history -- ZitSticka's $5M Series A (2019) and Stone & Skillet's $5M Series A (2026) were both BFG-led -- and the firm's own marketing claims a "4 out of 5 win rate" as the preferred partner for early-stage consumer founders, suggesting the firm typically seeks a lead or co-lead role rather than a passive check.
Portfolio Highlights
BFG's highest-profile win is OLIPOP, a functional prebiotic soda the firm backed pre-revenue that has since scaled past $500M in sales. Ibotta, a cashback/shopper-rewards platform, completed an NYSE IPO in April 2024 (ticker IBTA) -- the largest tech IPO in Colorado history at the time. The firm also lists several exits on its own site: Caulipower, Birch Benders, Curlsmith, Bear Naked, EVOL, Chameleon Cold-Brew, Cartograph, and Skratch Labs. Current active portfolio spans well-known DTC and better-for-you names including Athletic Greens (AG1), MUD\WTR, Graza, MALK, Quinn, Mid-Day Squares, Magic Mind, and Maev.
Team
BFG's leadership includes Tom Spier (Founder & Managing Partner, previously COO of Bear Naked), Dayton Miller (Managing Partner), Rajesh (Raj) Babu (Partner), Tyler Morgan (Principal), Elizabeth Earle (Vice President), Meg Legro (Associate), and Jack Davis (Director of Operations and IR). The partnership frames itself as founder-friendly operators rather than a pure investment-committee shop, citing long personal relationships with founders (the Birch Benders founder describes staying friends with the team a decade after the first check).
Decision Process & Founder Preferences
Public materials do not specify a formal decision-committee structure, but the small partner team and repeated founder testimonials about hands-on involvement suggest a partnership-style process rather than a large investment committee. BFG's stated founder preference is operators with real trailing revenue and a distinctive, opinionated brand point of view -- not concept-stage or pre-revenue teams outside of exceptional cases (OLIPOP being the cited exception).
Geographic Focus
Headquartered at 2120 13th St., Boulder, CO 80302; the firm has historically also maintained a Los Angeles presence (noted in 2019 press coverage) and its current portfolio is nationally distributed across major US CPG hubs with no stated non-US focus.
