Investment Thesis
Big Idea Ventures (BIV) is the world's leading investor in alternative proteins, ingredients, and food technology. Founded by Andrew D. Ive, who has invested in more early-stage and pre-seed food companies than any other investor globally, BIV's core thesis is solving the world's biggest challenges by supporting the world's best entrepreneurs in the food and agriculture space. The firm believes that sustainable, scalable solutions to global food security and sustainability will be built by innovative founders leveraging plant-based, cultivated meat, fermentation, and enabling technologies.
Investment Stage and Focus
Big Idea Ventures operates across multiple stages and fund vehicles:
New Protein Fund I (USD $50M) - Their flagship fund, now fully deployed having invested in 100+ companies focused on plant-based, cultivated, and fermentation-enabled proteins, ingredients, and technologies. This fund is backed by major strategic partners including AAK, Avril, Bel, Bühler, Givaudan, Meiji, Temasek Holdings, and Tyson Ventures.
Global Food Innovation Fund II (GFIF II) - Building on NPF I's success, GFIF II broadens the investment thesis to include proteins, fats, ingredients, sweeteners, flavorings, and mono-crops. Backed by AAK, Bühler, and family offices. Currently actively deploying with recent cohorts announced in 2025.
Generation Food Rural Partners Fund (GFRP) - A specialized fund that commercializes university-developed intellectual property in food, protein, and agriculture. This fund partners with universities to launch new companies, recruit management teams, and support them from inception. Focuses on economic development in rural communities and driving innovation from university ecosystems.
BIV also runs accelerator programs twice per year investing USD $200K ($125K cash + $75K in-kind value-adds) in selected cohorts across their New York, Singapore, and Paris locations.
