Biogen New Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
Biogen New Ventures is the corporate venture arm of Biogen Inc. (Cambridge, MA), formally launched in November 2025 under Chelsea Johnson, formerly a principal at Atlas Venture and an associate at Third Rock Ventures. Johnson describes it as "not a traditional venture fund." Its purpose is to build Biogen's early-stage pipeline by investing in emerging external science, then partnering with or acquiring the assets later. Biogen frames this as part of an "open innovation model" that balances internal research, business development and equity investing. Equity is described as "the lead up" to a partnership: it funds earlier or higher-risk programs so they can be de-risked before Biogen commits to a deal. The team works alongside Biogen R&D and BD (led by Adam Feire) rather than as a standalone financial investor.
Sector and Therapeutic Focus
The team stays mostly close to Biogen's strengths, with room to move into new areas. Areas of interest listed on Biogen's partnering page:
- Neuroscience: Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's, SMA, ALS, Friedreich ataxia, Duchenne and myotonic dystrophy, Dravet, Angelman, epilepsy, MS
- Immunology: lupus, Sjogren's, Graves', myasthenia gravis, atopic dermatitis, alopecia areata, hidradenitis suppurativa, allergy, IBD
- Nephrology: AMR, IgAN, PMN, FSGS, C3G, Alport syndrome, transplant rejection
- Rare disease: rare cardiology, hematology and metabolic conditions with a clear path to patient identification
- Modalities and platforms: siRNA and mRNA, delivery technologies, next-generation chemistry (covalent, proximity-induced, AI-enabled), engineered biologics
This is a therapeutics investor. It is not a fit for software, consumer or digital health startups.
Stage Focus
Early stage. A Biogen job posting for the team asks for experience forming and operationalizing seed and Series A companies. Observed deals so far are Series A rounds (Altay, Estuary), plus a participation in Autobahn Therapeutics' $100M Series C in 2024 by Biogen before the team was formalized. The stated goal is to take risk off early, toward proof of mechanism, proof of biology and early proof of concept.
Check Size and Fund Structure
Biogen has not published a fund size, check size or target ownership. New Ventures invests from Biogen's balance sheet rather than a closed-end fund, so there is no fund life or vintage. Observed participation is as a non-lead strategic investor in syndicates. Check size is unknown.
Lead Tendency
Follows or co-invests. In both recent deals the round was led by dedicated biotech investors (Sound Bioventures and HealthCap at Altay; RA Capital at Estuary) and Biogen New Ventures participated. Johnson took a board seat at Altay, which suggests it takes governance roles even when it does not lead.
Recent Activity
- October 2026: Participated in Altay Therapeutics' $37M Series A (oral DUX4 inhibitor for FSHD). Co-led by Sound Bioventures and HealthCap. Johnson joined the board.
- October 2026: Participated in Estuary Biotherapeutics' launch with $103M total committed financing, including a $93M Series A led by RA Capital Management with Deep Track Capital, UPMC Enterprises and Pivotal bioVenture Partners (gene therapies for kidney disease, ADPKD). 4BIO Capital and GV co-led the earlier seed.
- June 2026: Biogen said it was still evaluating opportunities and planned to deploy capital later in 2026. These two rounds appear to be among its first.
- 2024: Participated in Autobahn Therapeutics' $100M Series C.
Fund status: actively deploying, early in the program.
Team
- Chelsea Johnson, Ph.D.: Head of New Ventures. Ex-Atlas Venture principal (six years), ex-Third Rock Ventures associate.
- Adam Feire, Ph.D.: Leads BD and New Ventures at Biogen and oversees the team.
- Kevin Bromby: Transactions.
- Laura Blumberg, Ph.D.: Search and Evaluation, New Areas.
- Catherine Abbadie, Ph.D.: Search and Evaluation, Neuroscience.
- Paul Andrews, Ph.D.: Search and Evaluation, Immunology.
Decision Process
Corporate process. The team sits inside Biogen Corporate Development and coordinates with R&D heads (immunology, neurology) and BD, so decisions likely need strategic sign-off from Biogen in addition to the venture team. Timeline is unknown. Inbound contact: [email protected].
Founder Preferences
Teams with differentiated science in Biogen's focus areas that could become a future partner or acquisition candidate. Strategic fit with the Biogen pipeline matters more than financial return alone. Founders should expect Biogen to want visibility into the program and a path to a later partnership.
Geographic Focus
Biogen is headquartered in Cambridge, MA. Recent investments are in the US (San Carlos, CA for Altay), and Biogen operates globally. No geographic restriction is stated.
Warm Intros
No stated requirement. Biogen runs an open partnering inbox, but a warm intro through a lead biotech investor already in the syndicate is likely the strongest route.
