BlackFin Capital Partners Research

Investment Thesis

BlackFin Capital Partners is a Paris-founded private equity and venture capital firm that invests exclusively in financial services and fintech across Europe. Founded in 2009 by four industry entrepreneurs (Laurent Bouyoux, Eric May, Paul Mizrahi and Bruno Rostain, who together built and sold the ProCapital/Fortuneo group), BlackFin runs two parallel strategies from the same sector conviction: a Buyout strategy taking primary, asset-light control stakes in established financial services businesses, and a Venture strategy backing early-growth European fintechs and insurtechs. The firm describes itself as Europe's leading financial services sector specialist, with deep operational expertise it applies to portfolio companies rather than passive capital alone.

Stage Focus

The Venture arm (BlackFin Tech) focuses on early-stage companies that are already past product-market fit and entering a triple-digit-growth, global-scale-up phase — roughly Series A through Series B/growth. It positions itself as a lead investor rather than a follower. The Buyout arm takes majority control (90% of its ~90 deals to date) in more mature, asset-light financial services businesses (brokerage, distribution, payments, processing, wealth and asset management) — a different, later-stage motion than the venture book.

Check Size

On the Venture side, BlackFin leads with initial investment checks ranging from €3 million to €30 million. Aggregate funds raised across BlackFin Venture I (€180M, 2018) and BlackFin Venture II (€390M, 2022) total roughly €570M, deployed across ~20 deals by a 10-person dedicated investment team. The Buyout side operates at a much larger scale: four Financial Services funds (Fund I €220M/2011 through Fund IV €1.8B/2024) totaling roughly €3.5B raised, executed by a 25-person team across ~90 deals.

Lead Tendency

BlackFin explicitly positions itself as a lead investor on the venture side and as a majority/control investor on the buyout side — this is not a firm that typically takes passive minority tickets.

Recent Activity

BlackFin closed its largest-ever European buyout fund (Fund IV, €1.8B) in October 2024. Since then it has continued to build out its financial services platform: acquiring embedded insurance broker SPB (April 2024), completing a majority acquisition of Luxembourg-based fund administrator Arendt Investor Services (closed July 2026), and acquiring Luxembourg management company Lemanik AM. Portfolio company Concentra Grupo expanded in Iberia by acquiring Portuguese insurer Obimedia (July 2026), and portfolio company Comparadise was sold to APRIL. In July 2026, BlackFin itself agreed to sell a minority GP stake to Blue Owl Capital's GP Strategic Capital platform, a signal of the firm's own institutional scale-up. The firm also publishes a weekly Substack newsletter, Fintech Wrap-Up, tracking European fintech and insurtech activity.

Portfolio Highlights

Active Venture portfolio companies include Descartes Underwriting (climate-risk insurtech), Agicap (cash-flow management SaaS), AKUR8 (AI-driven insurance pricing), Hawk AI (AI financial-crime detection for banks), Timeline, Formalize, Aufinity Group (wealth management), Wealthcome, Sinpex, Embankment, Weefin (ESG data for financial institutions) and TransFICC (fixed-income trading connectivity). On the Buyout side, the active portfolio spans IBS Capital Allies, Fundsight, OpGroen, SPB, MorgenFund, Concentra Grupo, Groupe Bacalan, De Hypotheker, Blauwtrust Groep, CAFPI, Fokus Nordic and Aestiam, plus the newly added Arendt Investor Services and Lemanik AM.

Team

  • Laurent Bouyoux, Eric May and Paul Mizrahi — Founding/Managing Partners, co-founders of ProCapital/Fortuneo (sold 2006)
  • Bruno Rostain — Founding Partner, ex-Chairman of Aviva France's Management Board
  • Julien Creuzé — Equity Partner heading the Venture team, ex-Aster Capital
  • Loic Fonteneau and Michele Foradori — Partners on the Venture team (later-stage deals, UK build-out; ex-J.P. Morgan and UniCredit/Anthemis respectively)
  • Romain Grimal, Pauline Brunel, Chloé Novène — Investment Directors on the Venture team, prior VC experience at XAnge, Impression Ventures and ALLVP
  • Dr. Kai Franzmeyer — Equity Partner and Head of Germany (DACH region)
  • Sabine Mathis, Daniel Cohen-Sabban, Damien Lestang — senior Equity/Managing Partners on the Buyout side

Decision Process

With 9 partners and a team of 50+ split across dedicated Buyout and Venture teams, decisions run through a partnership structure rather than a solo GP or a single investment committee gate, consistent with the firm's specialist, sector-embedded model.

Founder Preferences

BlackFin favors founders and management teams building technically differentiated, sector-specific financial infrastructure — pricing/underwriting AI, financial-crime AI, embedded finance, wealth-tech and fixed-income market infrastructure — rather than generalist consumer fintech. On the buyout side it looks for asset-light, non-balance-sheet financial services businesses (no banks or insurers) with room for operational transformation and buy-and-build consolidation.

Geographic Focus

BlackFin operates from five offices across Western Europe — Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels, Frankfurt and London — giving it multilocal, on-the-ground sourcing across Continental Europe, Benelux, Germany/DACH and the UK. Its investor base is geographically split roughly 45% the Americas, 45% Europe and 10% Asia Pacific.
