Buff Gold Ventures Research

Investment Thesis

Buff Gold Ventures (BGV) is a Boulder, Colorado venture firm that funds University of Colorado startups. It administers the Buff Venture Fund, a private fund with a formal partnership with Venture Partners at CU Boulder, the university's commercialization arm. The fund is not managed, operated or controlled by the university. The pitch is that CU Boulder produces startups at one of the highest rates among universities, and that Colorado has lacked a regular early-stage investor for deep tech, biotech and life sciences spinouts. In the partners' words, they look for the most interesting, disruptive technology, led by the strongest founders, aimed at an unmet market need and usually backed by strong intellectual property.

Eligibility and Focus

BGV backs CU Boulder faculty, students, alumni and startups licensing CU intellectual property. Sectors are deep tech and life sciences: photonics and optical interconnects, methane and carbon sensing and removal, sodium batteries, smart windows, volumetric 3D printing, therapeutics, vaccines and genomic AI, plus AI deployment monitoring. The founders' stated mission is companies that solve large-scale problems in climate, health and other industries. A CU connection is effectively a requirement, so this is not a generalist fund.

Stage Focus

The firm states it provides Pre-Seed, Seed and Series A capital, follow-on capital, and help with syndication. The 2023 CU announcement says the fund supports entrepreneurs at all stages, beginning at seed.

Check Size

The website does not publish check sizes. A third-party profile (NFX Signal) lists a sweet spot of about $1.5M with a range starting near $100K; this is low confidence and unverified by the firm. The first fund closed at $25M in January 2022, to be invested over five years, which implies a small number of initial checks with meaningful reserves for follow-ons.

Lead Tendency

The firm describes assisting with syndication and follow-on capital but does not say whether it leads. Lead tendency is unknown. Co-investor data is thin; NFX lists Versant Ventures as a co-investor.

Recent Activity

  • January 2026: portfolio company Think Bioscience raised a $55M oversubscribed Series A.
  • January 2026: Vycarb announced new deals to scale in 2026.
  • February 2026: LongPath announced its first financing disbursement from a $162M Department of Energy loan.
  • April 2026: Swept.ai's founder was named 2025 Entrepreneur of the Year by CMURC.
  • September 2026: Polaris Electro-Optics secured a $50M Series B.
  • October 2026: Mana Battery raised $10.15M for an anode-free sodium battery.

Fund I was announced as closed in January 2022. Whether a second fund exists is not stated, so fund status is unknown. The portfolio shows continued follow-on activity in 2026.

Portfolio Highlights

The site lists twelve companies: Polaris Electro-Optics, LongPath Technologies, SinusLogic, VitriVax, Tynt Technologies, Think Bioscience, Manifest (formerly Vitro3D), Vycarb, Codebreaker, Mana Battery, Swept.ai and Boco Bio. The first cohort of five (LongPath, Vitro3D, Tynt, Think Bioscience, VitriVax) was announced in March 2023. LongPath has a conditional DOE loan commitment of up to $189M, VitriVax has DoD and Gates Foundation funding, and Think Bioscience's Series A is the largest disclosed round.

Team

  • Mark Lupa, Co-Founder and General Partner: PhD in pharmacology, former neuroscience researcher, founder of High Country Venture, early partner at Tango, board member of Taligen Therapeutics, Mosaic Bioscience, Sinopsys Surgical, Trisalus, VetDC, Codebreaker and Vitro3D.
  • Sally Hatcher, Co-Founder and General Partner: JD, founder of Precision Photonics and MBio Diagnostics, built CU's commercialization programs (I-Corps Hub, Research to Market, Embark, Ascent Deep Tech Accelerator).
  • Tasso von Windheim, Associate: PhD in electrical and computer engineering from Duke, co-founder of Undercover Colors.

Decision Process

A two-partner firm with an associate. The decision process is likely partnership-based, though the firm does not publish it. Founders are asked to email a deck to [email protected] covering team, CU connection, value proposition and sustainable competitive advantage, so a cold deck appears acceptable.

Founder Preferences

Bold, execution-focused founders committed to building at scale, with defensible IP and a CU Boulder tie. Scientific founders from university labs are the core profile.

Geographic Focus

Boulder and the Colorado Front Range, anchored to the CU Boulder ecosystem. Portfolio companies are Colorado-based or CU-derived. The office is at 831 Pearl St., Boulder, CO 80302.
