Bullpen Capital Research
Investment Thesis
Bullpen Capital is the original pioneer of "post-seed" venture investing — the funding gap between a seed round and Series A. Founded in San Francisco in 2010 by Paul Martino, Duncan Davidson, and Richard Melmon, the firm's thesis has stayed unchanged for over a decade: back "pre-consensus" companies that have already found early product-market fit but are overlooked by the rest of the venture market for no good reason — because the founders are out of network, the sector is unfashionable, the company is outside a coastal hub, or the team doesn't match a pattern-matched founder profile. Bullpen's own marketing leans into this directly, opening its site with a list of the dismissive reasons other VCs pass: "Your TAM is too small," "Your competitor just raised a huge round," "Your team doesn't fit the right profile," "Your revenue isn't high enough for us." The firm has funded 100+ companies over the last decade and describes itself as doing "one thing, and doing it well": early-stage financing for people and companies that have found product-market fit but are overlooked.
Stage Focus
Bullpen's sweet spot is the post-seed stage, sitting between traditional seed and Series A. Third-party trackers place the firm's formal stage focus at Seed and Series A, and its recent activity backs that up — the firm has both led seed and seed-extension rounds (Arro's "Seed+" round) and participated in Series A rounds as a non-lead follow-on investor (EDGE Markets' $29.2M Series A, led by CoinFund).
Check Size
Multiple third-party sources converge on a typical check size in the $2M–$5M range, with a stated "sweet spot" around $2.5M. Historically the firm has also written smaller initial checks into earlier funds and larger follow-on reserves into breakout portfolio companies as they scale toward Series A and beyond.
Lead Tendency
Bullpen has a strong history of leading rounds — it led key investments in FanDuel, Braze, HomeLight, and, most recently, led Arro's Seed+ financing round (announced alongside co-investors Crosslink, Bling Capital, Larkin Street, and BAM Ventures). It also participates as a non-lead investor in later, larger rounds for existing or promising post-seed companies, as seen in EDGE Markets' Series A and SpeedLabs' $6.5M seed round.
Recent Activity
Bullpen is actively deploying out of Fund VI, a $145M fund raised in December 2022 (announced by the WSJ as a fund for "unloved gems") that brought total assets under management to over $630M at the time; third-party trackers now place AUM around $737M. Recent Fund VI investments include Super (2026, real-money gaming), Creed (2025, faith-based AI companion), Arro (2025, credit-building fintech), EQL Games (2025, iLottery infrastructure), Jolly (2025), and continued activity in Switchyards (2024, neighborhood coworking) and CAMP (2023, family entertainment retail). In 2026 the firm has also shown up in follow-on rounds for existing portfolio companies EDGE Markets (Series A, prediction/gaming markets infrastructure) and SpeedLabs (seed, real-time sports markets engine).
Portfolio Highlights
Bullpen's portfolio includes three companies that went public in a single year (2021): Braze (NASDAQ: BRZE), Wag! (NASDAQ: PET), and Grove Collaborative (NYSE: GROV). Its most famous outcome is FanDuel, which merged into Flutter Entertainment (LSE: FLTR) after Paul Martino served on FanDuel's board for over five years during its highest-growth period. Other notable exits and milestones include Ipsy (IPO), HomeLight, Splitwise, Life360 (ASX: 360), Citus Data (acquired by Microsoft), and Jackpocket (acquired by DraftKings). The firm's broadest current portfolio spans consumer, gaming, fintech, proptech, and enterprise software, with the companies page listing 100+ logos across Funds I through VI.

Decision Process
Bullpen operates as a multi-GP partnership (Paul Martino, Duncan Davidson, Eric Wiesen, with Richard Melmon in an emeritus capacity), each historically leading their own deals with support from the broader team. The firm emphasizes a data-informed diligence framework that combines financial and operating metrics to avoid "vapor valuations" when assessing pre-consensus companies.
Founder Preferences
Bullpen explicitly seeks founders who are overlooked for reasons unrelated to their business quality — wrong pedigree, wrong geography, wrong sector, or lack of network access. The firm has built a track record of backing founders from underrepresented backgrounds; in two of its recent funds, well over half of investments were in companies with a female or person-of-color founder. Team members describe wanting founders with deep conviction who have already ground through the anonymous, pre-product-market-fit period — as with Switchyards' Michael Tavani, whom Bullpen profiled for staying disciplined through five years of iteration before finding traction.
Geographic Focus
Primarily U.S.-based (San Francisco Bay Area with team members also based in New York and Philadelphia), with selective international exposure through portfolio companies like Rei do Pitaco (Brazil) and EQL Games' international lottery partnerships in the UAE and Peru.
