Cape Fear BioCapital Research
Investment Thesis
Cape Fear BioCapital is an early-stage venture fund dedicated exclusively to forming and growing therapeutics companies in North Carolina. The firm argues that North Carolina has the science, talent and university research base (Duke, UNC, NC State and the broader life sciences corridor) to build world-class biotech companies, but lacks early capital and operators who have built a company before. Cape Fear aims to fill that gap by writing first institutional checks and working hands-on with founders to turn academic science into medicine.
Investment Criteria
The firm's published approach has five parts:
- Pre-seed to seed stage: first checks, and joining syndicates, to create seed-ready opportunities from academic science.
- Dedicated to North Carolina: companies rooted in the state.
- Compelling science: validated mechanisms, novel modalities, and platforms that could create new therapeutic categories.
- Platforms and assets: both multi-indication platform companies and single-asset programs with a clear path to the clinic.
- Near-term clinical milestones: companies within roughly three years of an IND filing.
Stage Focus
Pre-seed and seed are the core. Cape Fear also opportunistically joins strong syndicates for later-stage North Carolina companies already underway, which explains Series A and Series B names in the portfolio (Ten63 Therapeutics at Series A, Incyclix Bio at Series B).
Check Size
The site does not publish check sizes. The firm describes itself as writing first checks and joining syndicates, consistent with small initial checks. No range is asserted in the structured data.
Lead Tendency
The firm says it writes the first institutional check in early companies, as the EnFuego Therapeutics CEO confirmed, but it also joins syndicates in later rounds. Lead tendency is therefore recorded as both.
Recent Activity
Cape Fear announced the final close of Fund I on September 3, 2026, as an expanded vehicle. Since launching in late 2024 it has made seven investments out of more than 200 opportunities reviewed, and says it has capacity for three to five more from Fund I. Anchor backers include Moore Strategic Ventures (the vehicle of Louis M. Bacon), Parexel, and a group of North Carolina biotech operators and executives. In June 2026 Cape Fear and Parexel launched the Parexel Biotech Incubator for the state's earliest-stage therapeutics companies. Press coverage reports plans for a roughly $100M second fund, with an ambition to invest in and launch more than 40 seed-stage companies over the firm's first decade.
Portfolio Highlights
The site lists six companies:
- Thoracic Innovations: cardiothoracic surgery medtech, pre-seed, Duke origin.
- Ten63 Therapeutics: AI-enabled small molecule oncology discovery (BEYOND platform), Series A, Duke origin.
- Incyclix Bio: clinical-stage CDK2 inhibitor INX-315 for CDK4/6-resistant breast cancer, Series B, UNC origin.
- iOrganBio: AI-driven cell and organoid manufacturing platform (CellForge), pre-seed.
- EnFuego Therapeutics: siRNA platform for undruggable cancer pathways, pre-seed, UNC origin.
- Eldec Pharmaceuticals: ELD615 Orai1 modulator peptide for chronic respiratory disease, pre-seed, UNC origin.
Team
- Ed Field, General Partner: 25+ years in biotech leadership, 3 exits, raised over $200M, advanced more than 10 programs into the clinic.
- Jimmy Melton, General Partner: 30+ years founding and leading life science enterprises in NC; former Managing Director of Carolina Research Ventures, a university venture fund.
- Dave Ousterout, PhD, General Partner: 15+ years as founder, scientist and executive; co-founder and former CSO of Locus Biosciences (spun out of NC State and Duke, over $150M raised).
Decision Process
Three equal General Partners, so a partnership model. No committee structure is published.
Founder Preferences
North Carolina founders, typically academic scientists spinning out of Duke, UNC or NC State. The firm often brings in an experienced operator as CEO, as it did at EnFuego, where it recruited Mike Dombeck to lead alongside founder Dr. Chad Pecot.
Geographic Focus
North Carolina only, centered on the Research Triangle (Durham, Chapel Hill, Raleigh). The firm is based in Durham, NC. Warm introductions are not stated as required, but the firm sources heavily from university tech transfer and local networks.
