CMC Capital Partners Research
Investment Thesis
CMC Capital Partners is a Shanghai-headquartered private equity and growth investment firm founded in 2010 by Ruigang Li (former head of Shanghai Media Group and China's SMG/SVA television empire). Originally launched as China Media Capital, the firm rebranded to CMC Capital and built its reputation as one of the most connected media and entertainment investors in Greater China before deliberately broadening into technology and consumer growth equity. The thesis centers on three pillars: internet-enabled consumer and B2B platforms, tech-enabled enterprise services and AI/big-data-driven innovation, and premium media and entertainment content and distribution. In recent years the firm has layered a fourth thread onto that thesis through its Huawen Qingneng (clean energy) sub-fund and its CMC AI Creative Fund, pushing into strategic materials for batteries and semiconductors, autonomous mobility, and frontier AI (world models, embodied intelligence, and generative 3D).
Stage Focus
CMC operates primarily as a growth-equity investor rather than an early-stage VC. It typically enters at Series B and later, participating in large strategic and pre-IPO rounds, though it will do earlier Pre-A/A rounds selectively when a founder or technology thesis is strong (e.g., LiberAI's Pre-A+ round). It is best characterized as growth/late-venture through pre-IPO and public-market crossover.
Check Size
CMC does not publish standard check sizes. Disclosed rounds range from co-lead positions in $100M+ syndicates up to lead roles in $300M+ rounds (WeRide's 2021 Series B). Fund III alone raised over $950M in 2020, and total AUM across USD and RMB vehicles now exceeds $4 billion, implying typical check sizes in the tens to low hundreds of millions of dollars for control or influential-minority growth positions.
Lead Tendency
Mixed. CMC has led marquee rounds outright (WeRide's autonomous-driving Series B, the strategic investment in Taiyang Technology via its clean-energy fund) but frequently participates or co-leads in high-velocity, highly competitive AI and materials rounds (e.g., co-leading Ganfeng Lithium Battery's latest round through its Huawen Qingneng Fund).
Recent Activity
CMC has been highly active through 2026: a strategic investment in Taiyang Technology (a vertically-integrated Chinese beryllium producer) in August 2026, a Pre-A+ investment in world-model/embodied-AI startup LiberAI in July 2026, a co-led strategic investment in solid-state battery developer Ganfeng Lithium Battery in July 2026, and continued participation in AI-3D/generative-3D companies in the VAST/Tripo AI ecosystem around September 2026. Portfolio company WeRide (autonomous driving, HKEX: 0800, dual-listed on Nasdaq) was added to Hong Kong Stock Connect in June 2026 and to the HKEX Tech 100 Index in September 2026, both signals of a maturing, liquid exit in CMC's book. The fund is actively deploying, with a visible cadence of new strategic investments roughly monthly through mid-to-late 2026.
Portfolio Highlights
Notable current and historic portfolio companies include Kuaishou (short video, HKEX-listed), Bilibili and iQiyi (video/streaming platforms), Mango TV/Mango Supermedia (SZ: 300413), CAA (Creative Artists Agency), Full Truck Alliance/Manbang Group (freight marketplace, NYSE: YMM), Yatsen Holding/Perfect Diary (beauty, NYSE: YSG), Eleme (food delivery, later acquired by Alibaba), NetEase Cloud Music, WeRide (autonomous driving, dual-listed Nasdaq/HKEX), the VAST/Tripo AI generative-3D ecosystem, LiberAI (embodied AI), Taiyang Technology (strategic metals), Ganfeng Lithium Battery (solid-state batteries), and consumer brands including KK Group, M Stand, Dingdong Maicai, Leqee, Yishou, and Chubby Bear. CMC states it has made over 120 investments historically, spanning roughly 15 technology, 20 consumer, and 25 media portfolio companies.
Team
- Ruigang Li - Founding Managing Partner. Founder of the firm in 2010; former chairman of Shanghai Media Group/SMG and one of the most prominent dealmakers in Chinese media.
- WeiChoy Lee - Managing Partner.
- Alex Gu - Partner; also leads the Huawen Qingneng (clean-energy/strategic-materials) fund, which sourced the Taiyang Technology and Ganfeng Lithium Battery investments.
- Han Gao - Managing Director and General Counsel.
- Ophelia Zhang - Managing Director.
Decision Process
Partnership-led investment process spanning a small team of named partners and managing directors, consistent with a mid-sized institutional growth-equity shop rather than a solo-GP fund.
Founder Preferences
CMC gravitates toward founders and management teams with category-leading or infrastructure-defining positions in large, structurally growing Chinese markets, either consumer/media platforms with scale (Kuaishou, Mango TV) or deep-tech/strategic-resource plays with defensible, hard-to-replicate supply chains (Taiyang Technology's beryllium value chain, Ganfeng's solid-state battery IP).
Geographic Focus
Overwhelmingly Greater China, with offices in Shanghai (headquarters), Beijing, and Hong Kong. Investments and portfolio companies are concentrated in mainland China and Hong Kong, with several portfolio companies (WeRide, Yatsen, Full Truck Alliance) subsequently cross-listing in the US.
