Day One Capital Research
Investment Thesis
Day One Capital is a Budapest-based venture capital firm that backs Central and Eastern European (CEE) founders with what it calls "conviction capital." Founded in 2012 by Elek Straub, György Simó, and Csaba Kákosy, the firm's stated philosophy is to "invest extremely early, but only into teams capable of competing globally from day one." The firm prioritizes founder talent combined with clarity of thinking, execution ability, and ambition over polished traction metrics. Day One positions itself as a "sparring partner" to founders rather than a passive check-writer, engaging in direct, peer-based relationships where difficult questions are surfaced proactively rather than avoided.
Sector Focus
Day One Capital has shifted its allocation significantly across fund vintages. Earlier funds were roughly 75% B2B SaaS and 25% deeptech; the current strategy is nearly inverted, with priority given to sectors propelled by AI advancement:
- AI-native software, including legacy software modernization
- Robotics, drones, and autonomous systems
- Cybersecurity and data infrastructure
- Defense, security, and resilience technology
- Creative industries (B2B and prosumer software), backed via a dedicated "Creative Minds Fund"
Stage Focus
The firm invests exclusively at Pre-Seed and Seed stages. It typically leads or co-leads financing rounds and takes an active, hands-on approach with portfolio companies, including board involvement (partner Zsolt Weiszbart sits on the boards of Colossyan, Recart, Webshippy, and Miros).
Check Size
Typical investment range is EUR 300K to EUR 2M per round.
Fund Status
Day One Capital is investing out of its third fund (CEE Fund II), which reached a second close of EUR 45M with a target final close of EUR 60M expected in early 2026, targeting a portfolio of roughly 20 companies. LP composition is approximately 70% institutional investors, including the European Investment Fund and MFB Invest, and 30% private investors such as experienced founders, entrepreneurs, and family offices. Total AUM across vehicles (CEE Fund II plus the Creative Minds Fund) is approximately EUR 94M.

Founder Preferences
Day One explicitly looks for technical founding teams capable of competing globally from the earliest stage, with a stated preference for talent, clarity of thinking, execution ability, and ambition over early traction. The firm has a deliberate strategy of sourcing from overlooked CEE cities (Osijek, Brno, Skopje) and from the CEE diaspora globally, rather than concentrating solely on Budapest, Warsaw, or other well-covered hubs.
Geographic Focus
Central and Eastern Europe broadly, with an explicit emphasis on secondary/overlooked cities across the region (Osijek, Brno, Skopje) in addition to Budapest, plus diaspora founders with CEE roots operating anywhere globally. Headquarters is in Budapest, Hungary.
