DeepTechXL Research
Investment Thesis
DeepTechXL is a Dutch venture capital fund launched in 2022 as the investment vehicle growing out of HighTechXL, the Eindhoven deep-tech venture builder founded in 2013 by ASML, Philips, BOM, TNO, and High Tech Campus Eindhoven. The fund's thesis is that great technology alone is worthless without a clear investment strategy, adequate funding, a founding team capable of commercializing it, and a supporting ecosystem of knowledge institutes, corporates, and mentors. DeepTechXL positions itself as one of the few investors willing and able to underwrite the higher risk, longer time-to-market profile of true deep-tech ventures, rather than software-first startups.
Sector Focus
DeepTechXL invests specifically in Dutch "key enabling technologies" (KET) where the Netherlands holds scientific strength: Advanced Materials, Digital Technologies, Engineering and Fabrication Technologies, Nanotechnologies, Photonics and Light Technologies, and Quantum. Portfolio companies must also address one of four societal themes: Energy Transition & Sustainability, Security, Health & Care, and Agriculture, Water & Food, with explicit alignment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. In practice, the portfolio skews heavily toward photonics, semiconductors, precision electronics manufacturing, and quantum hardware, with a secondary cluster in medtech/health hardware.
Stage Focus
DeepTechXL invests across the full lifecycle from pre-seed through Series A-C, providing what it calls "full lifecycle financial support for early- to growth-stage ventures." The core entry point is seed stage, with follow-on reserves earmarked for later rounds in the strongest portfolio companies.
Check Size
For seed investments, DeepTechXL targets roughly 20 seed-stage companies with initial tickets of €100,000 to €2 million. For follow-on rounds, the fund aims to further invest in around 15 of those companies across Series A-C, capped at a maximum of 15% of total capital commitments per company.
Lead Tendency
DeepTechXL frequently leads: it led TracXon's €4.75M seed round (Sept 2025), co-led Keiron Printing Technologies' extended €10M seed (Aug 2025) alongside Cottonwood Technology Fund, led MicroAlign's €1M seed (Jun 2024) with PhotonVentures, and led SuperLight Photonics' seed round (Sept 2023) with Oost NL. The fund states it intends to be the lead investor in Series A and B rounds and to syndicate in Series C.
Recent Activity
The fund was seeded in 2022 with ASML as a participating investor in a new €100M Dutch deep-tech vehicle, plus a €9M RVO "Seed Capital Deep Tech" loan. Fund I subsequently closed with roughly €110M in total capital commitments, with Invest-NL contributing €15M. Since then DeepTechXL has been actively deploying: seed investments in SuperLight Photonics (2023), MicroAlign (2024), and an extended Keiron Printing Technologies round plus a new TracXon seed round (both 2025). Third-party trackers note continued 2026 follow-on activity in the Keiron relationship, consistent with an actively deploying fund.
Portfolio Highlights
Notable portfolio companies include Alphabeats (Philips-technology-based neurotech for mental performance), inPhocal (CERN-derived laser marking technology), Gilbert Technologies (patented Electro Hydro-Dynamic Atomisation inhaler for pulmonary drug delivery), Keiron Printing Technologies (Laser-Induced Forward Transfer solder-paste printing for electronics manufacturing), Sandgrain (low-cost unique-identification IC technology), Delft Circuits (cryogenic i/o cabling for quantum computing), Senergetics (fiber/sensor CUI monitoring solutions), SuperLight Photonics (supercontinuum-generation lasers), MicroAlign (fiber-to-chip coupling for photonics, an Eindhoven University of Technology spin-off), and TracXon (a TNO spin-off building sustainable hybrid printed electronics as a PCB alternative).

DeepTechXL operates with a structured investment committee process, including a dedicated Valuation Committee chaired by Ronald Maurer, reflecting the fund's institutional backing (ASML, Philips, BOM, TNO, Invest-NL) and governance requirements.
Founder Preferences
The fund explicitly looks for the combination of defendable core IP (patents, licenses) and a founding team with complementary skills and deep commitment to teamwork, frequently backing university and research-institute spin-offs (TU Eindhoven, University of Twente, TNO).
Geographic Focus
DeepTechXL invests specifically in Dutch deep-tech startups and scale-ups with highly promising international growth perspectives, based out of High Tech Campus 27, Eindhoven.
