First Run Research
Overview
First Run (firstruncpg.com) is a Washington, DC food and beverage platform that describes itself as "the only venture platform built only for food & beverage." It has operated since 2014 and says it has built consumer brands "hundreds of times." The platform has three integrated stages: the First Run Accelerator (idea to revenue), the First Run Angel Group (FRAG, first traction), and the Fund (national scale). The firm is run by operators rather than financiers, and its pitch is that it brings manufacturing, distribution and retail access alongside capital.
Investment Thesis
The thesis is that starting a food company has never been easier, but building the business behind it has not. Food is "an experience business disguised as a product business": inventory, manufacturing, freight, slotting and trade spend make atoms expensive and margins thin. In software money scales something that already works; in food, "money without knowledge buys faster mistakes." The firm argues that venture capital left consumer for AI (roughly two thirds of US venture dollars, and by a recent post nearly nine in ten in one quarter) while strategics and private equity keep acquiring food brands every year, so early capital in food is uncrowded. Its blog argues from an analysis of 155 acquisitions that incumbents buy rather than build.
Stage Focus
The site states the fund invests "Early to Growth." By stage, the Accelerator works with ideas and companies at $0 to $250K ARR, FRAG invests at $250K to $1M ARR, and Fund II targets $1M to $10M ARR, taking proven brands from regional to national. Stage preferences therefore span Pre-Seed, Seed and Series A.
Check Size and Structure
No fund size, target raise or fund check range is published; the investors page deliberately omits a target raise, return figure, term sheet or deck. The Angel Group sets a $10,000 minimum check for members, with no management fees or carry on direct deals, 6 to 10 deals per year, and occasional SPVs when a founder requests one. The Fund II reference implies a second fund, but its size and close status are not disclosed.
The Three Signals
Every deal is screened against three signals: healthy margins (40 to 50 percent gross margin, trade and marketing under 25 percent, profitable from price rather than promotions), customer obsession (repeat rate, reorders before ad spend) and low competition (stale categories where the work is hard, such as frozen, cold chain and self-manufacture). Public examples of the filter applied include a frozen house-cut fry brand and HPP tropical juices that own their manufacturing, both backed, and two inbound passes (a crowded aisle and a generic co-packer).
Categories
Food and beverage only: snacks, drinks, frozen, functional, pantry, dairy and alternatives, proteins and sauces. Anything that lives on a shelf, in a fridge or in a freezer.
Lead Tendency and Involvement
Accelerator and angel investments are first-money, hands-on and operator-led, with formulation in the firm's own facility, local sales and distributor introductions. Whether the Fund leads rounds is not stated, so lead tendency is recorded as unknown. Involvement is operational and ongoing ("day one, to exit").
Portfolio Highlights
The homepage showcases five brands: Jesse & Ben's (frozen tallow-fried house-cut fries, which grew out of the Swizzler food truck founded by Jesse Konig and Ben Johnson after Wake Forest), Snacklins (plant crisps), Just Ice Tea, WTRMLN WTR (cold-pressed watermelon juice) and Caribe (HPP tropical juices). The site claims many consumer brands built since 2014 and a large nationwide store footprint, though the figures are animated and not captured in text. No exits are listed.

Decision Process and Founder Preferences
Decisions appear to be made by a small partnership of operators. Founders who win on product rather than promotions, belong in the aisle or freezer, move fast with people who have done it, and are ready to do the hard things. Accelerator applications are rolling: contact, call, tour, then cohort. Founders pitch via firstruncpg.com/pitch; investors reach the firm at [email protected].
Recent Activity
The firm published a run of thesis essays in 2026 (Why Big Food Buys, The Uncrowded Trade, How We Actually Decide, Food Is Not Venture Capital), added Jack Hamrick as General Partner in May 2026, and hosted a welcome dinner at InvestCPG 2026.
Geography
Headquartered in Washington, DC. No stated geographic restriction; the Accelerator includes a tour of the physical kitchen, which suggests a regional skew toward the DC area.
