Friends & Family Capital Research
Investment Thesis
Friends & Family Capital (F&FC) is a Menlo Park venture firm built around the idea that generational companies need world-class finance functions and operations during their most critical growth phases, not just capital. The firm was founded in 2019 by Colin Anderson, the former CFO of Palantir who scaled its finance organization from one person to sixty, and John Fogelsong, a second-generation venture capitalist (son of IVP co-founder Norm Fogelsong) and Anderson's brother-in-law. Their stated thesis centers on backing founders who recognize how step-function technological change creates new market opportunities, expanding what Anderson calls the efficient frontier of our free society and the institutions that power it. F&FC structures its value-add around three force multipliers: Team (building finance functions from first hire through CFO), Operations (operating model design, forecasting, systems and dashboards), and Capital (fundraising execution from seed through Series K and IPO).
Stage Focus
F&FC's model is distinctive: it takes small, early positions in a wide set of pre-revenue and early-revenue startups (reportedly up to ~40 companies per fund) to build a relationship as trusted finance/ops advisors, then concentrates meaningful primary capital (5-10% of fund size per company, roughly 8-12 companies per fund) once a company approaches or crosses $20M+ in annual revenue. In practice this means the firm touches seed-stage companies but its highest-conviction, largest checks land at Series B/C. Third-party trackers describe its typical entry point as Series B.
Check Size
Initial positions can be small (angel/pre-seed-sized checks into pre-revenue startups). Primary investments sized at 5-10% of fund AUM translate to roughly $6M-$12M checks out of the $118M Fund III, and external estimates put the firm's average investment size at $10M-$50M when blended across its full portfolio and follow-on activity.
Lead Tendency
Mixed. F&FC has led rounds outright (e.g., Valinor Enterprises' $54M Series A, January 2026) and co-led others alongside specialist funds (e.g., Northslope's $22M Series A, co-led with Goldcrest Capital, January 2026).
Recent Activity
F&FC closed its third fund at $118M in June 2024 (bringing total capital raised, including SPVs, to $350M+; Fund II closed at $91.5M in 2020 against a $60M target). Tracxn estimates current AUM near $777M. Recent 2026 activity includes leading Valinor Enterprises' $54M Series A (Jan 2026, defense-tech holding company), co-leading Northslope's $22M Series A (Jan 2026, Palantir-native applied AI), and participating in Arch's round (reported late July 2026). The firm continues to publish a Market Conditions Update quarterly research series and a CFO Q&A interview series aimed at founders and finance leaders in its network.
Portfolio Highlights
F&FC's site cites 100+ portfolio companies, 130K+ jobs created, $50B+ in capital raised post-investment by portfolio companies, and $2.5T+ in aggregate market cap increase (as of December 2025). Marquee names include Palantir, SpaceX, Robinhood, Anduril, Airtable, Gusto, Flexport, Verkada, Astranis, Radiant Nuclear, Peregrine, Gecko Robotics, Cyera, Figure, Oxide, and an early angel position in Facebook. Portfolio skews heavily toward defense/national-security tech, enterprise software/infrastructure, and fintech.

Decision Process
Small partnership (2 co-founders plus a lean supporting team of ~9), consistent with a partnership-style decision process rather than a large investment committee. Founder/portfolio commentary emphasizes hands-on, iterative collaboration on fundraising decks and financial models rather than a formal committee gate.
Founder Preferences
F&FC looks for founders who recognize a technological paradigm shift creating a new market opportunity, who can show durable revenue growth with a path to defensible free cash flow at scale, and who are willing to engage deeply with F&FC's operator team on finance and operations - not just take a check passively.
Geographic Focus
Primarily United States, Silicon Valley-headquartered with a national (not purely Bay Area) portfolio spanning defense/gov-tech hubs like Washington, D.C. (Valinor) and other U.S. metros (Northslope in Denver).
