Inflection Equity Research
Investment Thesis
Inflection Equity is a small, Chicago-based venture partnership founded in 2015. Its own description (via LinkedIn, since the firm's website is not currently rendering content) states the firm is "a Chicago-based venture capital group specializing in early stage medical and hardware startups (pre-FDA/pre-revenue), with a focus on medical devices." The firm frames itself as more than a capital source: "With the team's significant experience in medical devices, product development, law and operations, the Inflection Equity strategy is to act not only as an investment source, but also an active hands-on advisor for the portfolio companies."
In practice, the only publicly verifiable investment activity attributed to the firm is not in medical devices at all — it is in Impossible Objects, a Northbrook, Illinois advanced-manufacturing/3D-printing company serving aerospace and defense customers. That gap between the stated medtech thesis and the observed hardware/advanced-manufacturing deal is worth flagging rather than papering over: this looks like a small, relationship-driven vehicle whose real activity is concentrated around its managing partner's own prior company, not a firm running a broad, active medical-device sourcing process.
Sector Focus
Two distinct signals exist:
- Stated focus (firm's own LinkedIn copy): early-stage medical devices, pre-FDA/pre-revenue hardware.
- Observed focus (actual investments): industrial/advanced manufacturing hardware (composite-based additive manufacturing) serving aerospace and defense end markets.
No other sectors were found in portfolio, press, or data-provider records.
Stage Focus
Only two data points exist, both in the same company: a 2017 Series A (as a participant, not lead) and a 2026 Series B (as lead investor). This is too thin a sample to characterize a stage thesis with confidence. The firm's own positioning implies early-stage (pre-revenue/pre-FDA) focus, consistent with participating in a $6.4M Series A, but the firm has also now led a $40M Series B for the same company nine years later — evidence of a long, concentrated relationship rather than a repeatable early-stage program.
Check Size
No reliable check-size data is available. Per-investor allocations in the 2026 round (a $40M raise split across five investors, with Inflection Equity as lead) are not disclosed by any source reviewed. No fund size or AUM figure was found. This field is intentionally left unset rather than estimated.
Lead Tendency
Mixed evidence: participant in the 2017 Series A (led by OCA Ventures), lead investor in the 2026 Series B. Classified as "both" given the small sample.
Recent Activity
The firm's only confirmed recent activity is leading Impossible Objects' $40 million Series B, announced September 11, 2026 — seven business days before this research was conducted. Managing partner Gintaras Vaisnys was quoted: "We're excited to double down on our investment in Impossible Objects and lead this Series B as the company enters its next phase of commercial scale... This funding will help it scale to meet that demand." No other 2024-2026 activity (new fund announcements, other portfolio companies, team changes, published essays) was found across press coverage, Crunchbase, PitchBook, Caplight, or LinkedIn.
Portfolio Highlights
The only portfolio company identified across Caplight, PitchBook, and press coverage is Impossible Objects (impossible-objects.com), a Northbrook, Illinois manufacturer of industrial 3D printers built on Composite-Based Additive Manufacturing (CBAM) technology, serving aerospace, defense, and advanced-manufacturing customers including the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army Rock Island Arsenal. Impossible Objects has raised at least $46.4M+ total across the two rounds Inflection Equity is linked to, plus roughly $20M in U.S. government contracts/SBIR awards. Founded 2017; Robert Swartz is founder and chairman; current CEO is Steve Hoover.
Caplight lists Inflection Equity Partners as having exactly one tracked portfolio company. No other investments, exits, or notable companies were found in any source reviewed.
Team
- Gintaras Vaisnys — Managing Partner, Inflection Equity. Led the firm's 2026 Series B investment into Impossible Objects. Notably, he personally served as CEO of Impossible Objects from 2018 to 2022 and still sits on its board — meaning the firm's largest disclosed investment is also a company its managing partner previously ran and continues to govern. This is an insider relationship, not an arm's-length deal sourced from a broad pipeline.
- Nate Bode — Director (at Inflection Equity), per his Northwestern CIERA biography ("Following his time at CIERA, Dr. Bode became a Director at Inflection Equity"). Holds a PhD; was a CIERA postdoctoral researcher at Northwestern (2011-2012). Prior experience includes the Boston Consulting Group, Gift of Adoption Fund, and Accion. He has since moved into an operating role — Director of Strategy and Revenue Growth — at Impossible Objects itself, again illustrating the tight, overlapping relationship between the fund and its one visible portfolio company.
No other team members, partners, or staff were identified. LinkedIn lists the firm at "2-10 employees."
Decision Process
Not confirmed. Given the firm's small size (2-10 employees per LinkedIn) and that its lead investor quote in the 2026 raise came from a single managing partner, a solo-GP or very small partnership structure is plausible, but this is not stated anywhere and is left as low-confidence.
Founder Preferences
Not documented anywhere in available sources. No founder-preference language exists on the (currently non-functional) website or in any secondary source.
Geographic Focus
Chicago, Illinois is the firm's home base (1235 W Webster Ave). Its one confirmed portfolio company, Impossible Objects, is also headquartered in the Chicago area (Northbrook, IL), with a second site in Rochester, New York. No explicit geographic mandate was found, but the observed pattern is Chicago/Midwest-centric and relationship-driven rather than geographically broad.
Data-Quality Note
inflectionequity.com currently returns an essentially empty homepage and 500 Internal Server Errors on every subpage attempted (/about, /portfolio, /team). This research relies entirely on third-party sources: LinkedIn's company page (the source for the firm's self-description, headcount, founding year, and location), Caplight and PitchBook (portfolio/founding-year corroboration), and press coverage of the Impossible Objects Series B and Series A rounds (TechCrunch-style trade press, Chicago Business Journal, the company's own press release, and 3D-printing trade outlets). Confidence in the stated medical-device thesis is therefore lower than confidence in the observed manufacturing/aerospace investment, since the former is drawn from a single un-verifiable self-description and the latter is corroborated across many independent sources.
