Knife Capital Research
Investment Thesis
Knife Capital is a Cape Town-based venture capital firm that accelerates the international expansion of African innovation-driven businesses by leveraging what it calls "Knowledge, Networks and Funding." The firm was established in 2010 as the venture capital division of Here Be Dragons, the emerging-market investment group founded by internet entrepreneur Mark Shuttleworth, taking over management of seven portfolio companies to seed its first fund. Knife Capital targets high-growth, B2B, innovative technology companies with strong intellectual property, a well-defined product with recurring revenue, and clear global expansion potential from a Sub-Saharan African base. The firm's stated value-chain approach, FIND MAKE GROW REALISE (FMGR), frames how it engages companies across the investment lifecycle from sourcing through exit.
Sector Focus
The firm concentrates on five broad technology areas: enterprise technology, hardware and deep tech, healthcare, education technology, and financial technology. Recent portfolio activity also shows a growing emphasis on SpaceTech, evidenced by its investment in nanosatellite company Simera Sense and a steady stream of 2026 blog content analyzing South Africa's SpaceTech ecosystem (SANSA, regulatory frameworks, and competitiveness of local SpaceTech companies globally).
Stage Focus
Knife Capital invests across a structured multi-fund pipeline rather than a single stage. Grindstone Accelerator (launched 2013, relaunched as an early-stage fund in 2020) backs earlier-stage South African tech startups. KNF Ventures, a Section 12J tax-incentivized vehicle launched in 2016 and expanded in 2021, backs growth-stage SMEs. Knife Fund III (closed at $50M in 2023) is reserved for follow-on funding into "breakout companies" that have already achieved product-market fit, generally at Series A and Series B.
Check Size
Per the firm's own funding page, Series A checks start around $600K (ZAR 10M), with Knife Fund III capable of writing up to $8M into a single follow-on round. All funds reserve capital for follow-ons into existing winners.
Lead Tendency
Knife Capital frequently leads or is the named lead investor in its rounds - it led Kasha's $21M Series B (2023), Coachbetter's $4.31M seed (per third-party investor-profile data), and is consistently the anchor investor named in press coverage of its portfolio raises.
Recent Activity
Knife Capital marked its 15th anniversary in July 2025 with new investments in Sticitt (fintech schoolfees platform) and Optique (a digital-first, affordable optometry chain in South Africa). In June 2026, the firm secured a KNF II milestone exit as Redpoint Advisors acquired portfolio company VoxCroft Analytics. The firm closed Knife Fund III at $50M in 2023 with commitments from Standard Bank, IFC (World Bank Group), the SA SME Fund, Draper Gain Investments, Skybound Capital, and AfricaGrow (Allianz).
Portfolio Highlights
Notable exits include Fundamo (acquired by Visa for $110M, 2011), CSense Systems (acquired by General Electric, 2011), iKubu (acquired by Garmin, 2015), FlightScope (MBO, later IMG Arena), orderTalk (acquired by Uber Eats, 2018), WizzPass (acquired by FM:Systems, 2021), ProGlove (acquired by Nordic Capital, 2022), and Quicket (acquired by Ticketmaster, 2024). Active portfolio companies span AI/manufacturing (DataProphet), industrial IoT/safety (Stone Three), SpaceTech (Simera Sense), health distribution (Kasha), education administration (d6 Group), edtech content (Snapplify), customer journey SaaS (InQuba), talent marketplaces (Outsized), and home services (Kandua).

Decision Process
Knife Capital operates as a multi-partner investment team (partnership model) rather than a solo-GP structure, with dedicated leads for risk/legal (Jersey) and finance (Group CFO) alongside the investing partners in Cape Town and London.
Founder Preferences
The firm looks for management teams that can clearly articulate a customer pain point, address a sizeable addressable market, show high gross margins, maintain recurring revenue and strong governance, and demonstrate genuine international/global expansion ambition beyond the South African home market.
Geographic Focus
Primary focus is South Africa, with a broader Sub-Saharan African mandate for Knife Fund III. Companies with offshore holding structures must retain a material South African presence to qualify. The firm has physical offices in Cape Town (headquarters), London, and Jersey, and requires companies to show credible potential for international (often UK/EU/US) expansion.
