Ludlow Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
Ludlow Ventures is a Detroit-founded, sector-agnostic early-stage venture firm built on a single organizing principle: "people matter most." Founded in 2009-2010 by Jonathon Triest, and joined shortly after by Brett deMarrais, the firm explicitly rejects thematic or sector-driven investing in favor of backing founders they want a genuine long-term relationship with. Triest has described the approach bluntly: "I see my peers 'out diligence' themselves, when in reality you can only look at the people," and has set the bar for a successful bet at "if we are not standing up in [a founder's] wedding, we've failed." The firm markets itself as "VC without ego" — collaborative, low-pretense, and oriented around being a hands-on first call for founders rather than a committee-driven capital allocator.
Sector Focus
Ludlow is explicitly sector-agnostic, but its five-fund portfolio history clusters around consumer internet and marketplaces, fintech and payments, vertical SaaS, gaming and gaming hardware, security, proptech/workplace analytics, and AI-enabled infrastructure and consumer apps. Recent activity (Row Zero, Deepgram, Pure/PurePoker) shows continued interest in data/AI infrastructure and gaming-adjacent fintech, alongside long-standing consumer and commerce bets.
Stage Focus
Ludlow invests almost exclusively at pre-seed and seed, occasionally participating in Series A follow-ons for existing portfolio companies. They aim to be an early, trusted check rather than a late-stage validator.
Check Size
Initial checks typically range from $100,000-$2,000,000, with individual partners' sweet spots reported around $150K-$750K (deMarrais) and the firm overall known for writing $25K-$150K to $250K-$1.5M checks depending on round size and conviction. Average seed round size across their 70+ seed investments is roughly $2.9M, consistent with a syndicate participant/small-lead role rather than sole large-check lead.
Lead Tendency
Mixed — historically willing to lead small seed/pre-seed rounds directly out of Detroit (e.g., Welcome's $1.4M round, Onboard's $1.25M round), but on larger, more competitive seed rounds (Row Zero $10M, Pure $8M) they participate alongside a designated lead (IA Ventures, Hidden Capital) rather than leading themselves. Best characterized as "both."
Recent Activity
Ludlow remains an active seed investor with roughly 5 investments in 2025 and continuing activity into 2026. Notable recent transactions:
- Pure (July 2026): $8M seed for a compliance-first, real-money peer-to-peer gaming payments/identity infrastructure platform, led by Hidden Capital, alongside MaC Venture Capital, Goodwater Capital, SignalFire, and others.
- Row Zero (May 2025): $10M seed for a cloud spreadsheet platform built for billion-row enterprise datasets, led by IA Ventures, alongside Trilogy Equity Partners, Founder's Co-op, K9 Ventures, and Functional Capital.
- Stable Sea (March 2025): Participated in a $3.5M round.
Fund status: actively deploying out of Fund V ($50M, closed circa 2024), the firm's fifth vehicle, backed by LPs including Dan Gilbert, Northern Trust, Vintage Investments, and StepStone. Total AUM across five funds is approximately $250M.
Portfolio Highlights
Ludlow's most notable exit is Honey, its first-ever investment, which PayPal acquired for approximately $4 billion in November 2019 — reportedly returning roughly 6x the firm's entire $15M debut fund on that position alone. A second major exit is Duo Security, the Ann Arbor-based security company acquired by Cisco for $2.35 billion in 2018.
Other portfolio highlights include two reported unicorns/near-unicorns — StockX (sneaker/streetwear resale marketplace) and Density (workplace occupancy analytics, reported ~$1B valuation in 2021) — plus Notarize (online notary network, reported $760M valuation in 2023), Backbone (mobile gaming controller hardware, $40M Series A in 2022), and Captions (AI video editing, $25M Series B in 2023). The broader portfolio spans 30+ active companies including Deepgram, Product Hunt, Copilot Money, AngelList, Replika, May Mobility, Paperspace, Row Zero, Boulevard, Provi, Headout, Signal Advisors, Airspace Link, Point One Navigation, Bigscreen, DualEntry, and Scentbird.
Team
- Jonathon Triest — Founder & Managing Partner. Started Ludlow directly out of the University of Michigan with no prior institutional investing experience; previously ran a UI/UX-focused design firm (Triest Group) and worked as a creative director. Has invested in 50+ technology companies over the firm's history and mentors at accelerators including Up West Labs, The Brandery, and Highway 1.
- Brett deMarrais — Partner. Joined roughly three years after founding, after running a wedding videography business; University of Michigan graduate and Michigan Venture Fellows Program alum (2015). Based in the Detroit metro area; reported check range $150K-$750K with a $250K sweet spot; has backed companies including ZeroMark and Umba.
- Lindsay Daugherty — Associate/Investor, based in New York, NY. Yale graduate (2022, BA English/History); joined from Bullish and previously worked at Gift Card Bank and Plenty. Her hire marked Ludlow's formal East Coast/NYC expansion.
Decision Process
Small partnership-driven decision-making rather than a formal investment committee — the firm is explicitly known for fast turnaround (often days, not weeks) because conviction is built between two or three partners rather than run through a large committee structure.
Founder Preferences
Ludlow prioritizes founder character and relationship fit above market size, sector trend, or even traction at the earliest stages. Triest has said the throughline across the portfolio is simply "the people who founded them are people who we want to spend time with." They favor founders willing to build a genuine, informal relationship (illustrated by the firm's own "Carpool" podcast format) over a polished, pitch-deck-only interaction.
Geographic Focus
National footprint with deep Detroit/Midwest roots (headquartered at 1555 Broadway, Detroit, MI) and a growing New York City presence following Lindsay Daugherty's hire. No formal geographic restriction on where they'll invest.
