Mercato Partners Research
Investment Thesis
Mercato Partners is a Salt Lake City growth-stage investment firm, founded in 2007, that backs "leaders who are changing how we live, learn, and work, for the better." The firm invests in high-growth, mature technology and branded consumer companies and says it exclusively invests in growth. Its stated beliefs: it makes commitments rather than bets, keeps a deliberately small portfolio so each founder is "one of a kind, not one of hundreds," and builds "through partnerships, not playbooks," curating advisors, industry experts and investors for each founder. It aims to be the founder's "first call" even when it is not the first capital.
Stage Focus
Growth equity. Portfolio entries on its site show Series A through Series F rounds, with the firm's own entry points mostly at Series A to Series C and later growth rounds. The site frames fit around companies with $10M+ in annual revenue. It is not a seed or pre-seed investor.
Check Size
Third-party coverage describes Mercato's growth equity checks as typically starting around $10M. The firm does not publish a check range on its site, so the $10M minimum is an inference with moderate confidence. Portfolio round sizes shown on the site range from $7M to $80M.
Lead Tendency
The firm describes a Series B lead in Ownwell (2025) and takes board seats, with directors and managing directors named per company. It leads and also participates in larger rounds, so lead tendency is recorded as both.
Recent Activity
- Traverse Fund IV, a $400M growth fund, was announced in February 2023 and is deploying. Earlier funds include a $52M first fund (2007) and a Fund III that targeted $175M.
- November 2025: portfolio company Lambda announced it had raised over $1.5B in equity for superintelligence cloud infrastructure.
- 2025: Ownwell Series B (lead) and a Wellth round are listed on the site.
- 2024: Mercato was named among the most founder-friendly VCs (Inc.), and Ryan Sanders was named an Outstanding Director.
- Third-party posts say Traverse IV appeared in Bloomberg's 2026 private fund league tables for growth funds.

AUM is not published on the site (a data aggregator shows roughly $1B+ but the figure is truncated), so it is omitted. Domains for portfolio companies were not confirmed from the page and are left null. Round-level stage per company is not sourced to a press release, so it is omitted.
