MPower Partners Research
Investment Thesis
MPower Partners is a Japan-based venture capital fund whose mission is to "empower visionary gamechangers and unlock transformative growth." Founded in 2021 by three veteran finance executives - Kathy Matsui (former Goldman Sachs Japan Vice Chair), Yumiko Murakami (former OECD Tokyo Centre Director), and Miwa Seki (former Morgan Stanley / Clay Finlay) - MPower was launched as Japan's first ESG-integrated global venture capital fund. The firm applies a proprietary ESG framework to every portfolio company and positions itself as a bridge-builder between Japan's startup ecosystem and global capital, talent, and markets. It backs "tech-enabled solutions to societal challenges," and with Fund II (launched March 2025) added a second explicit theme, "Japan Dynamism": startups that bolster Japan's national resilience and long-term growth potential (deep tech, energy security, defense-adjacent and supply-chain resilience areas).
Stage Focus
MPower operates two vehicles with different stage mandates. MPower Partners Fund II (successor to Fund I) targets middle-to-later-stage growth startups, aiming to help Japanese companies reach unicorn scale. The dedicated WPower Fund, focused on women-founded and women-empowerment businesses, invests at the early stage. Across the platform, the firm covers seed through growth/late-stage rounds, with an emphasis on being able to support a company from early traction through international scale-up.
Check Size
MPower does not publish a specific check-size range. Third-party trackers describe it as flexible across stages; visible deal sizes range from smaller WPower early-stage checks (e.g., a JPY 250M / ~$1.7M Pre-Series A for NaLaLys, co-invested alongside Delight Ventures and DNX Ventures) up to growth-stage rounds in later-stage companies like Phoenix Tailings and HistoSonics.
Lead Tendency
Evidence points to a mixed lead/follow pattern. Several announced deals (e.g., NaLaLys) show MPower as one of multiple co-investors alongside firms such as DNX Ventures and Delight Ventures, while other press releases describe MPower directly as "investing in" a company without explicit lead language. The firm should be treated as a frequent syndicate participant that also leads selectively, particularly in Japan-based deals.
Recent Activity
MPower has been highly active through 2025-2026, announcing at least nine new investments in roughly 16 months: Ex-Fusion (Jun 2025, laser nuclear fusion), Nihon Cyber Defence (Nov 2025, cybersecurity), Transcelestial (Nov 2025, laser communication infrastructure), Sakana AI (Nov 2025, frontier AI), MiRESSO (Feb 2026, beryllium for nuclear fusion), EdgeCortix (Apr 2026, energy-efficient AI semiconductors), LQUOM (Apr 2026, quantum communication), HistoSonics (Jul 2026, non-invasive cancer therapy), and Teal Health (Sep 2026, at-home cervical cancer screening). Fund II (launched March 2025) added the Japan Investment Corporation (JIC) as a new LP, with a JPY 3 billion commitment. Fund I launched in 2021 with a $150M target; Fund II's target has been reported at roughly $200M, though final close amounts for both funds are undisclosed.
Portfolio Highlights
The portfolio spans roughly 40 companies, about 80% based in Japan with the remainder in the US and Southeast Asia. Notable names include Sakana AI (frontier AI), Phoenix Tailings (critical minerals/rare earths, MIT spinout), Heralbony (art agency for artists with intellectual disabilities), Teamshares (US employee-ownership fintech), Jupiter Intelligence (climate risk analytics), HistoSonics and Teal Health (US healthtech), and JEPLAN (circular-economy chemical recycling). Deep-tech and hard-tech names (Ex-Fusion, MiRESSO, LQUOM, EdgeCortix) reflect the newer "Japan Dynamism" thesis.

Founder Preferences
MPower explicitly prioritizes diversity: roughly 55% of portfolio companies are led by women or other diverse founders. The WPower Fund exclusively backs female founders and women-empowerment businesses across women's wellbeing, childcare/eldercare, women's economic independence, and broader social diversity. Outside WPower, MPower backs technical founders tackling large societal or structural problems (healthcare access, climate, energy security, cybersecurity, deep tech).
Geographic Focus
Primarily Japan (about 80% of the portfolio), with the remainder in the US and Southeast Asia. MPower positions itself explicitly as a bridge between Japan and global capital markets, supporting portfolio companies' expansion both into and out of Japan.
