Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures (NMFV) is the corporate venture capital arm of Northwestern Mutual, the Milwaukee-based life insurer and wealth manager (Fortune 500, more than 165 years old, more than five million clients). The website pitches it as "startup agility meets industry expertise": NMFV looks for emerging startups in fintech, wealthtech, health and wellness, and data analytics that can change how people manage money and plan their financial futures, and that can plug into Northwestern Mutual's client base and advisor network. This is a strategic investor first. Capital is paired with pilots, partnerships and deployments inside Northwestern Mutual.
The site names four areas of focus:
- The future of the consumer wallet: new financial products and solutions for consumers who want a digital layer on their financial lives.
- The future of the advisor: technology that helps financial advisors serve clients better.
- The future of health and wellness: consumer-centric health and wellness companies.
- The future of data and analytics: companies using new datasets and analytics in financial services and beyond.
The April 2026 announcement of Fund III narrows the public framing to fintech and insurtech, while the portfolio still includes health, data infrastructure and consumer names.
Stage Focus
Fund III targets emerging and growth-stage companies in fintech and insurtech. The 2019 Fund II announcement said it would mainly invest in Series A and Series B rounds. Third-party trackers show seed participations as well (Hello Divorce, Goalsetter, Paceline, ORO Impact, Atomic Insights) and growth rounds (zerohash Series D, Meanwhile Series B, Letter AI Series B).
Check Size
The 2019 Fund II coverage cited initial checks of $500K to $5M, with follow-on reserves. Fund III check sizes are not publicly disclosed. NMFV usually appears as a participant in rounds led by others, so its own check is often a small part of the round.
Lead Tendency
Tracked rounds mostly show other firms leading (Harbert Growth Partners on Levitate, Mark Roberge on Letter AI, Bain Capital Crypto on Meanwhile, Nyca and others on zerohash). Typical of a strategic CVC, NMFV looks like a follower or co-investor. Confidence is low.
Recent Activity
On 27 April 2026 Northwestern Mutual announced a $150M commitment to NMFV, called Fund III, which brings total venture allocation to $350M. The history: Fund I was $50M in 2017, Fund II was $150M in 2019 with reserves, and Fund III is $150M. NMFV has made more than 50 investments. Recent tracked deals include Levitate ($15-16M, March 2026), Letter AI ($40M Series B, February 2026, after a Series A in October 2025), ORO Impact seed (January 2026), Atomic Insights seed (January 2026), Modern Life Series A (November 2025), Meanwhile Series B (October 2025) and zerohash Series D (September 2025). Fund status: actively deploying.
Portfolio Highlights
The portfolio page lists about 50 companies. Notable names: Chime (IPO June 2025), Betterment, zerohash, Amino, Ocient, OJO Labs, Vestwell, Trust & Will, Ladder, Harness Wealth, Boldin (formerly NewRetirement), Meanwhile, Levitate and Letter AI. Exits flagged on the site: Breeze, Carpe Data, Gabi (Experian), Live Oak (DocuSign) and Rize (Fifth Third). A footnote says the companies shown are representative of a Milwaukee-focused portfolio. Treat that as a presentation note, since the list includes companies based elsewhere.

Third-party sources also list Craig Schedler as founder and managing director and Stig Haagensen as senior director of digital innovation and accelerators. The site does not show them, so they are not submitted.
Decision Process
Not disclosed. As a corporate fund, decisions presumably run through Northwestern Mutual's internal venture and corporate development process and weigh strategic fit. Founders can submit through the form on the site, which accepts an attachment up to 6MB.
Founder Preferences
Founders building tools that improve the experience of clients and advisors, or that give Northwestern Mutual a distribution or product partnership. Through the gener8tor Future Ventures program, NMFV also supports founders historically underserved in accessing capital.
Geographic Focus
National in the US, with a Milwaukee and Midwest tie through the accelerator work. Some portfolio companies are international (Atonarp in Japan, Meanwhile in Bermuda).
Gaps
Fund III check size, ownership targets and decision process are not public. The $350M figure is total venture allocation, not strictly AUM.
