Off Piste Capital Research
Investment Thesis
Off Piste Capital is a solo-GP, early-stage venture firm founded in 2026 by Max Samuel, investing in "important technology companies" building the systems and infrastructure of the future. The firm's stated edge is a two-pronged sourcing strategy: deep US network access (embedded deal flow from the Thiel ecosystem, including PayPal Mafia, Thiel Fellowship, Founders Fund, and SpaceX/Palantir/Anduril alumni) combined with close relationships with well-connected European founders and operators. Off Piste positions itself as the bridge that lets ambitious European founders reach US capital, customers, technology partnerships, and talent, while giving US-network deal flow a foothold in Europe. Its thesis is explicitly generalist within "frontier" categories rather than sector-locked, spanning space infrastructure, biocomputing hardware, cryptographic security, defense tech, and AI-native media.
Stage Focus
Off Piste is an early-stage fund, investing at pre-seed and seed. Its first four disclosed checks (Stendr, Objection, Beyond Reach Labs, Octet) were all into young, recently-formed startups, several fresh out of YC or in their first institutional round.
Check Size
The firm describes writing "small collaborative checks" designed to "enable flexible co-investment opportunities" alongside larger lead investors (a16z, Variant, ex/ante, Y Combinator, and others are named as co-investors). No specific check-size range is publicly disclosed, consistent with a solo-GP fund that positions itself as a value-added participant rather than a round leader.
Lead Tendency
Off Piste follows rather than leads. Every named deal to date includes larger, more prominent co-investors (a16z, Peter Thiel, Balaji Srinivasan, ACME, Variant, ex/ante, Y Combinator), and the firm's own language ("small collaborative checks," "flexible co-investment") signals a follow-on, network-value-add posture rather than a price-setting lead investor.
Recent Activity
Off Piste held the first close of Off Piste Fund I in April 2026, targeting €25M ($30M). By the time of the announcement (April 29, 2026), the fund had already deployed into four companies: Stendr (Norway, counter-drone defense), Objection (UK, AI-adjudicated accountability infrastructure, backed by Peter Thiel and Balaji Srinivasan), Beyond Reach Labs (US, YC-backed deployable space structures), and Octet (UK, cryptographic proof of physical location, backed by Variant and ex/ante). The firm's public portfolio page has since grown to include three additional companies not mentioned in the launch coverage — Frontier Computing, Primary, and Tachyon — plus one still-undisclosed "Stealth" investment, with the page noting "More to be announced." Fund status: actively deploying.
Portfolio Highlights
- Beyond Reach Labs (YC W26) — deployable solar arrays and radiators for orbital power, raised a $10M seed and relocated to NYC.
- Stendr — Norwegian AI-native counter-drone command-and-control startup founded by Aleksander Leonard Larsen (Sky Mavis/Axie Infinity co-founder), raised a $5.4M pre-seed.
- Octet — UK-based cryptographic proof-of-physical-presence infrastructure, backed by Variant and ex/ante.
- Objection — UK accountability-infrastructure startup using AI "juries" to evaluate claims in news stories, backed by Peter Thiel and Balaji Srinivasan.
- Frontier Computing, Primary, Tachyon, and one stealth company round out the current disclosed portfolio.
Team
- Max Samuel — Founder & General Partner. Spent seven years at Thiel Capital (Peter Thiel's private investment office) in San Francisco and Los Angeles, then relocated to Norway in 2020 and spent five years as General Partner at SNÖ Ventures investing across the Nordics and Europe. Earlier career includes Credit Suisse and Wilson Sonsini. Yale University-educated. Currently based in Stavanger, Norway.
Decision Process
Solo GP. Max Samuel is the sole named investment decision-maker; there is no visible partnership or investment committee structure.
Founder Preferences
Off Piste's public LP base and co-investor network (Thiel ecosystem alumni, PayPal Mafia, Founders Fund, SpaceX/Palantir/Anduril veterans, Sky Mavis co-founder Aleksander Leonard Larsen as an LP) suggest a strong preference for founders with elite technical pedigrees, prior venture-backed exits, or direct lineage to the Thiel/Founders Fund network — as well as ambitious European founders seeking a US bridge.
Geographic Focus
Dual US/Europe focus, with particular strength in the Nordics (Samuel's home base) and the UK, alongside continued access to the US network built during his Thiel Capital tenure.
LP Base
First close backers include Edition Ventures (a fund-of-funds spun out of Thiel Capital), Apeiron Investment Group (Christian Angermayer's $7B firm), Wilson Sonsini, multi-stage fund leadership from the US and Europe, unicorn founders, strategic family offices, and Norwegian investors including Ragnar Horn, Erik Braathen, and Aleksander Larsen.
