Omega Funds Research
Investment Thesis
Omega Funds is a transatlantic life sciences venture capital firm founded in 2003/2004 by Otello Stampacchia, with dual headquarters in Boston, MA and Geneva, Switzerland. The firm's stated purpose is "delivering impactful medicines to patients," and it explicitly builds its investment process backward from patient outcomes rather than around conventional financing categories. Omega invests behind three convictions: exceptional people, impactful products, and breakthrough ideas. It is one of the more prolific company creators in biotech venture, having backed more than 150 life sciences companies since inception, contributing to over 50 marketed products, roughly 50 M&A exits, and about 47 public listings (IPOs).
Sector Focus
Omega concentrates almost exclusively on human therapeutics and precision medicine, with particular depth in:
- Oncology (targeted small molecules, ADCs, cell and gene therapy, oncolytic viral immunotherapy)
- Immunology and inflammatory/autoimmune disease
- Rare and genetic diseases (including gene therapy and RNA-targeted medicines)
- Precision medicine and drug discovery platforms
- Selective medical device and diagnostics investments (e.g., cardiac devices, cancer diagnostics)
The firm does not present itself as a generalist healthcare or digital-health investor; its portfolio is overwhelmingly biopharma and biotech platform companies, with occasional adjacent medtech and diagnostics bets.
Stage Focus
Omega describes itself as stage-agnostic across the full company lifecycle: it seeds and co-founds companies from company-creation stage, leads early venture rounds (Series A/B), and continues into late-stage private financings and public-market investing (PIPEs, IPOs, direct secondaries). A meaningful share of recent activity is company creation and Series A financings for newly launched biotechs (e.g., Windward Bio, Caldera Therapeutics, Spiro Medical), alongside larger Series B rounds for more mature private companies (e.g., Vaderis Therapeutics, Protego Biopharma).
Check Size
Check size is not disclosed publicly. Given the firm's participation in $67M-$650M+ financing rounds and its role in seeding/launching companies with $100M+ Series A rounds, per-company commitments likely span a wide range from company-creation capital up through large syndicate allocations in oversubscribed rounds.
Lead Tendency
Omega frequently originates and leads company-creation and early financings for the biotechs it helps launch (e.g., Windward Bio's $200M Series A, Caldera Therapeutics' $112.5M launch financing), and also participates as a syndicate member in larger rounds for more established private companies. Overall lead tendency is best characterized as "leads," reflecting its emphasis on founding and leading new companies rather than being a passive follower.
Recent Activity
Omega closed its eighth flagship vehicle, Omega Fund VIII, at $647M in July 2025 (oversubscribed against a $600M target), continuing the strategy used for the $650M Fund VII. The firm is actively deploying capital: recent 2025-2026 activity includes leading/participating in Series A financings for newly launched companies (Windward Bio $200M, Caldera Therapeutics $112.5M, Spiro Medical $67M, Alveus Therapeutics' $197M total Series A), a $130M Series B for Protego Biopharma, and a $152.5M Series B for Vaderis Therapeutics tied to its Phase 3 HEROIC study. Portfolio company Replimune received FDA approval for a new engineered viral immunotherapy for advanced melanoma in August 2026, and portfolio-derived asset Baxdrostat (Baxfendy) was approved by the FDA for hypertension in May 2026 (via AstraZeneca, which acquired original Omega portfolio company CinCor Pharma).
Portfolio Highlights
Omega's portfolio includes numerous well-known biotech names across therapeutic areas: Editas Medicine (gene editing), Beam Therapeutics (base editing), Juno Therapeutics (cellular immunotherapy, acquired by Celgene/BMS), Immunocore (T-cell receptor biologics, public), Sana Biotechnology (engineered cell medicines, public), Nuvation Bio (oncology, public), Gossamer Bio (immunology/oncology, public), Kronos Bio (public), Icosavax (public, later acquired by AstraZeneca), Prevail Therapeutics (acquired by Eli Lilly), Momenta Pharmaceuticals (acquired by Johnson & Johnson), and Micromet (acquired by Amgen). More recent portfolio additions reflect continued company-creation activity: Windward Bio, Caldera Therapeutics, Spiro Medical, Alveus Therapeutics, Vaderis Therapeutics, Protego Biopharma, Third Arc Bio, and Marea Therapeutics.

Decision Process
Omega operates as a partnership with an investment committee (Managing Directors including Stampacchia and Nessi sit on it) rather than a solo-GP structure. Cross-disciplinary teams evaluate platforms and products across disease areas before committee review.
Founder Preferences
Omega explicitly seeks to pair "world-class science and breakthrough products with brilliant entrepreneurs, pioneering scientists and proven business advisors." The firm is comfortable originating companies around scientific platforms and installing or co-building management teams, rather than only backing pre-formed founding teams — consistent with its heavy company-creation activity.
Geographic Focus
North America and Western Europe, with dual home offices in Boston, MA and Geneva, Switzerland, reflecting a genuinely transatlantic sourcing and portfolio footprint (e.g., European portfolio companies like Anjarium BioSciences, Etherna, and Vaderis Therapeutics alongside US-based companies).
