Outsized Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
Outsized Ventures is a London-based early-stage fund that backs "innovators, outliers, creators, pioneers, and trailblazers" building at the frontier of science and technology. The firm's public positioning leans deliberately blunt: its own site describes the game of early-stage investing as "fast, messy, and merciless," and promises founders that "if you are in, we are in" — an all-in, high-conviction posture rather than a spray-and-pray model. The firm is authorized and regulated by the UK Financial Conduct Authority. A distinguishing feature of the firm's model is an "Equity Back Guarantee," which allows founders to return unused capital while retaining their equity if the company does not meet expectations, a founder-friendly mechanism meant to de-risk taking Outsized's capital early.
Sector Focus
Outsized's portfolio skews deep-tech and science-based: biotech and life sciences (mRNA therapeutics, single-cell genomics, single-molecule proteomics), climate and carbon software, alternative protein and food tech (cultivated fat, plant-based dairy alternatives), aerospace/space propulsion, and advanced hardware/imaging. There is also a smaller cluster of digital health and AI/developer-infrastructure bets. This is consistent with the firm's public description of partnering with founders "pushing the boundaries of science and technology to solve the world's greatest challenges."
Stage Focus
Outsized invests at Seed and Seed+, explicitly targeting companies at the inflection point between seed and Series A. It is typically among the first institutional checks into a company.
Check Size
Reported typical investment size is $500K–$2M per company, with the firm aiming to build a concentrated portfolio of roughly 25 companies per fund rather than a high-volume spray strategy.
Lead Tendency
Not conclusively documented in public sources; treated as unknown. The firm's "all gas no brakes" positioning and concentrated portfolio size suggest an active, high-conviction role in rounds, but no source explicitly confirms a lead-investor pattern.
Recent Activity
The firm's inaugural fund had its first close in December 2021 at €60M (total fund size reported around $64M). It has been an active investor since, with roughly 15 known investments and continued deployment into 2025–2026, including a 2025 participation in Gigi (Paris-based AI social app) alongside Khosla Ventures, and reported involvement with Dynamo in early 2026. A notable exit occurred in January 2024, when portfolio company Biomage (single-cell RNA-seq analysis software) was acquired by Seattle-based Parse Biosciences.
Portfolio Highlights
Confirmed portfolio companies span biotech/life sciences (Kernal Biologics, Biomage — acquired by Parse Biosciences, Synthace, CytoSeek, Portal Biotech), food tech/alt-protein (Hoxton Farms, Climax Foods, Julienne Bruno), climate software (Emitwise, named one of the firm's flagship carbon-accounting bets), aerospace (Magdrive, a UK space-propulsion company), and advanced imaging hardware (Living Optics). The firm was recognized by TechFundingNews as one of "Europe's 10 best seed investors" in 2022.
Team
- Lomax Ward — General Partner. Legal background; previously a lawyer at Slaughter and May, later a Partner at Luminous Ventures, and co-founder of Allocate, a European GP/LP network.
- Rod Mallo (Rodrigo Mallo) — General Partner. Former investor at SOSV, a large deep-tech VC; a four-time startup founder and active angel investor before co-founding Outsized.
- Camila Segura — Founder Associate.
- Suleman Shah — Finance Director.
(Third-party sources also associate an earlier General Partner, Isabel Fox, with the firm's founding cohort; she does not appear on the current live team page and is not included as an active team member here.)
Decision Process
With two General Partners as the visible investment leads, decisions appear to run through a small partnership rather than a solo-GP or formal investment-committee structure.
Founder Preferences
Public messaging emphasizes backing technical, mission-driven founders tackling hard scientific and engineering problems (deep tech, biotech, climate, aerospace) rather than pure consumer or lightweight SaaS plays, though the portfolio also includes a small number of digital-health and AI-infrastructure companies.
Geographic Focus
Primarily UK/Europe (London-headquartered, FCA-regulated), with a growing number of US-based portfolio companies (e.g., Kernal Biologics, Climax Foods, Feed Me Seymour Health), indicating a transatlantic remit rather than a strictly domestic one.
