Prime Venture Partners Research
Investment Thesis
Prime Venture Partners (PrimeVP) is an early-stage venture capital firm based in Bengaluru, India. Its homepage describes it as "Early-Stage Venture Capital for Tech-Driven Founders, Sector Agnostic, Founders First", and it positions itself as a partner in company building, often the first institutional investor in a company. The firm says it wants to build disruptive product companies out of India. Managing Partner Sanjay Swamy has said the firm aims for multiple solid outcomes rather than chasing unicorns, and prefers a disciplined, right-sized fund over aggressive expansion.
Stage Focus
PrimeVP has historically written seed checks and increasingly focuses on pre-Series A rounds. Its portfolio page shows a typical pattern of a seed or SAFE followed by pre-Series A and Series A follow-ons in the same company, with occasional secondary purchases. Fund V was described in 2025 as focusing on pre-Series A investments.
Check Size
Fund V initial checks are $2M to $4M per company, with follow-on investment of up to $12M per company. Press coverage in May 2025 said the firm raised its check size from about $500K in earlier funds to a median of about $3.5M. Fund V targets 16 to 18 startups over four to five years.
Lead Tendency
The firm often leads. Recent press describes rounds "led by Prime Venture Partners" for Desible.ai, Inamo, Basil and StrainX, and co-investments alongside others (for example Zomint with Lightspeed). Lead tendency is therefore both leads and co-invests.
Recent Activity
Fund V of $100M was announced in March 2025, with about 80% committed at announcement and deployment starting in the second half of 2025. Fund IV was $100M, announced August 2021 with a $75M first close. Recent investments from the firm's own news page include Desible.ai (seed plus round, INR 32 crore), Zomint (INR 36 crore seed with Lightspeed), StrainX Bioworks ($13M round), Nivasa Finance ($3M seed), Inamo ($8M), and Basil ($2M). The fund is actively deploying.
Portfolio Highlights
The firm has backed more than 50 startups since 2012, and its portfolio page lists about 55 companies. Notable names include Wayground (formerly Quizizz), MyGate, Niyo, Wheelseye, Dozee, KredX, Happay, Sunstone Eduversity, Tracxn, SurveySparrow, HackerEarth, PlanetSpark, Freo, Zuper and ZipDial. Frinks AI (manufacturing AI), Hitwicket (mobile cricket game) and StrainX (biotech) show some range outside the core sectors. Tracxn is publicly listed in India.
