Rackhouse Venture Capital Research
Investment Thesis
Rackhouse Venture Capital is a San Francisco early-stage firm that backs founders and companies at the intersection of AI/ML and the real world. Its homepage frames the mission as letting the most competent and least discovered AI companies win, and it says it favors driven, passionate people regardless of pedigree who are obsessed with using data to make the world more efficient. Founder Kevin Novak, Uber's first head of data science and the inventor of Uber's dynamic pricing product, brings a data-science lens to sourcing and diligence.
In the Fund II announcement the firm is explicit about what it does not do: it is not chasing far-fetched science projects or deep tech. It wants pragmatic founders who can respond nimbly to the evolving AI landscape and solve present-day problems. It looks for AI companies that have already reached product-market fit, particularly in overlooked niches, with three traits: a clear and obsessive customer focus, generalist and agile technology organizations, and unique, hard-to-replicate distribution strategies.
A 2025 essay by Novak argues that infrastructure will matter more than algorithms, and touches on generative AI, nuclear power for compute, and the convergence of crypto and AI. The portfolio reflects this: data infrastructure, developer tooling, applied computer vision, and vertical AI applications.
Stage Focus
Rackhouse describes itself as early-stage. Fund II commentary indicates the fund size limits pre-seed and seed ambitions, and the stated preference for companies that have already found product-market fit points to seed and early Series A. Fund I closed at $22.3M in 2021 and made 32 investments with a reported 69% graduation rate. Fund II closed at $45M in 2024 and had completed eight investments at announcement, including Onbrand, InSummary and Crosshatch.
Check Size
The firm does not publish a check size range on its site. With a $45M fund and a portfolio-style approach, checks are likely small seed-scale checks, but this is an inference and is left unset in the structured data.
Lead Tendency
Nothing on the site states whether Rackhouse leads or follows. The portfolio includes companies where it appears alongside larger investors (for example Reality Defender's Series A was led by DCVC), so lead tendency is recorded as unknown.

Decision Process
Not published. Novak founded and leads the firm, and Baker joined as Partner, so decisions likely sit with the two investing partners, with venture partners acting as advisors and sourcing support. Recorded as partnership with low confidence.
Founder Preferences
Driven, passionate founders regardless of pedigree, with an obsessive customer focus and the ability to move nimbly. Technical depth in data and ML is valued, and the firm has backed academic and research-led founders such as Dr. Ashutosh Saxena (TorqueAGI) and Ben Colman (Reality Defender).
Geographic Focus
Based in San Francisco. Fund II investments are split between San Francisco companies and the rest of the U.S., with some non-U.S. investments in progress. Earlier portfolio includes companies operating in Africa (Wasoko, Amitruck).
