Rapha Capital Management Research
Investment Thesis
Rapha Capital Management, LLC is a Surfside, Florida-based life sciences investment firm founded in mid-2018 by Kevin Slawin, MD, an oncologic and robotic surgeon who previously founded Bellicum Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: BLCM, $161M IPO in December 2014). The firm's stated mission is to identify, at the earliest stage, biopharmaceutical, medtech, and longevity-science companies that will "profoundly improve peoples' lives while building great value," from what it calls a "sea of seemingly indistinguishable, less compelling opportunities." Rapha applies the same pattern-recognition Slawin used to back Bellicum's controllable cell-therapy platform (years before immunotherapy was broadly accepted) to new deals: identifying disruptive, often founder/inventor-led science before the broader market sees its value.
Sector Focus
Rapha invests almost exclusively in biotech, medtech, and adjacent longevity science:
- Cell and gene therapy for oncology and immunotherapy (Bellicum, Poseida, NexImmune, DELiver)
- Longevity and senolytics/anti-aging therapeutics (Eos SENOLYTIX, Perseus SENOLYTIX, Phoenix SENOLYTIX, SENOTHERAPEUTIX, Ponce Aurora)
- Medical devices and diagnostics (FIZE Medical's real-time urine-output/kidney monitoring platform, IMAGIN Medical's bladder-cancer detection device, PrintBio's 3D-bioprinted surgical mesh)
- Advanced materials with life-science and industrial application (NuMat Technologies' metal-organic frameworks)
Its one clear outlier is Sightly Enterprises, a San Diego video-advertising technology company, reflecting Slawin's broader angel activity rather than the core biotech thesis.
Stage Focus
Rapha typically enters at Series A, often as a first institutional check into founder/inventor-led biotech, sometimes taking board seats or an interim executive role. First investments in Poseida Therapeutics (July 2017, Series A-1, $1M) and NexImmune (July 2018, Series A, $1.7M) both occurred at relatively low pre-money valuations ($95M and $20M respectively), consistent with true early-stage entry. More recently, Rapha led FIZE Medical's $14M Series A-4 (January 2025), part of a cumulative $30M Series A program for the company.
Check Size
Based on disclosed first investments and follow-on activity, initial checks appear to run roughly $1M-$5M, with the firm able to lead larger rounds (e.g., the $14M FIZE Medical Series A-4) when convener of a syndicate rather than sole investor. Total investment across a position can reach several million dollars via reserves (e.g., $4.5M total into Poseida, $1.9M total into NexImmune).
Lead Tendency
Rapha frequently leads or originates financings: it led FIZE Medical's Series A-1 (2020) and Series A-4 (2025), and Rapha Capital BioVentures Fund I co-led (with Bigger Capital) a convertible note financing for the Ponce/DELiver anti-aging platform. Founder Kevin Slawin also personally engineered AsclepiX Therapeutics' $35M Series A (led by Perceptive Xontogeny Venture Fund) while serving as interim CEO, showing a willingness to operate portfolio companies directly rather than purely invest passively.
Recent Activity
Rapha and its portfolio have been active through 2025 and into 2026:
- January 2025: Led FIZE Medical's $14M Series A-4, part of a $30M cumulative Series A round for the fluid-management/kidney-monitoring device maker.
- February 2025: Eos SENOLYTIX (portfolio) appointed former Allergan CEO Brent Saunders as Advisory Board Chairman.
- May 2025: PrintBio received FDA clearance for its DynaFlex programmable surgical mesh.
- September 2025: PrintBio introduced DynaFlex at the American Hernia Society Meeting and reorganized/expanded its commercial leadership team; MD Anderson and Phoenix SENOLYTIX announced a CaspaCIDe cross-licensing agreement for cell and gene therapy applications.
- February 2026: Ponce Aurora appointed a former Estée Lauder executive as Chief Commercial Officer ahead of longevity consumer-product launches; PrintBio joined the ARPA-H PRINT Program for kidney bioprinting.
- March 2026: Portfolio company Eos SENOLYTIX entered a definitive merger agreement with Nasdaq-listed Pulmatrix, expected to close in 2026 with the combined company trading under a new Nasdaq ticker — effectively a public-market exit path for Rapha's stake.
- September 2026: FIZE Medical announced a first close of a new Series B round.
Portfolio Highlights
Notable exits: Poseida Therapeutics (IPO July 2020, Nasdaq: PSTX, ~$989M IPO market cap), NexImmune (IPO February 2021, Nasdaq: NEXI, ~$366M IPO market cap; Rapha reported a 59.2% net XIRR / 4.1x ROIC at lockup expiry), and Bellicum Pharmaceuticals (founder Slawin's prior company, 2014 IPO). Eos SENOLYTIX's pending merger into Pulmatrix represents an emerging third public-market outcome. Rapha also sponsored Arbor Rapha Capital Bioholdings Corp. I, a $172.5M biotech-focused SPAC that listed on Nasdaq (ARCKU) in November 2021, with Slawin on its board.
Team
- Kevin Slawin, MD — Founder & Managing Partner. Oncologic and robotic surgeon; pioneered robotic prostatectomy using the da Vinci System at the Texas Medical Center (2001). Founder of Bellicum Pharmaceuticals (2004; NASDAQ: BLCM, 2014 IPO). Co-inventor of the FDA-approved "prostate health index (phi)" test. Formerly Director of the Baylor Prostate Center and Dan Duncan Family Professor in Prostate Cancer and Prostatic Diseases at Baylor College of Medicine. Serves as board member, interim executive, or founder/CEO across much of the portfolio (3DBio Therapeutics, FIZE Medical, Demeetra AgBio, IMAGIN Medical, AsclepiX Therapeutics, Ponce Therapeutics, DELiver Therapeutics, Eos SENOLYTIX, Ponce Aurora, K2 Biolabs). No other named partners or investment staff appear on the public site — Rapha operates as a solo-GP-led shop, with Slawin's personal networks and operating involvement central to the model.
Decision Process
Solo-GP structure centered on Kevin Slawin, who is frequently a hands-on operator (board member or interim CEO) in the companies Rapha backs rather than a purely passive check-writer.
Founder Preferences
Rapha favors scientist- and physician-founders with deep technical or clinical expertise, mirroring Slawin's own path from practicing surgeon to biotech founder. Several portfolio companies (Ponce Therapeutics, DELiver Therapeutics, Eos SENOLYTIX, Ponce Aurora) were themselves founded or co-founded by Slawin, reusing IP and personnel from Bellicum's original cell-control technology.
Geographic Focus
US-centered, with a Houston/Texas Medical Center cluster (PrintBio, K2 Biolabs, Ponce Therapeutics, DELiver Therapeutics R&D), a Miami/Surfside, FL corporate base, and at least one Israel-linked portfolio company (FIZE Medical). Individual portfolio companies are also headquartered in Vancouver/Boston (NexImmune), San Diego (Sightly), Chicago (NuMat), and Baltimore (AsclepiX).
