Ridgeline Partners Research
Investment Thesis
Ridgeline (legal entity Ridgeline Capital Management, funds branded Ridgeline Ventures) is an early-stage venture firm that backs applied technology for operationally demanding markets. Its homepage frames the pitch as "Deep-tech is having its renaissance": the infrastructure that powers, moves and defends global economies is being rebuilt by founders who chose consequential markets on purpose. The firm names manufacturing, logistics, energy and defense as the core arenas, and AI, advanced computing, hardware and automation as the enabling technologies. Its stated edge is access: companies in these markets must sell to governments and Fortune 500 enterprises, and Ridgeline says it is embedded with both, where most venture firms never land a meeting.
Stage Focus
Press coverage describes investing primarily at pre-seed and seed. Earlier coverage (2024) quoted the firm's thesis as Seed and Series A businesses, and a 2022 Techstars piece described checks of up to $5M for 5 to 10 percent ownership. The firm also led Harbinger's $60M Series A, so it will go later than seed when it has conviction. Its own site says it wrote AMESA's first check.
Check Size
The firm does not publish a check size on its site. The only figure found is a 2022 report of checks up to roughly $5M, which is dated. Check size minimum and maximum are left unset rather than guessed.
Lead Tendency
CityBiz reports that Ridgeline typically leads or co-leads early-stage financings and stays involved as companies move from pilots to scaled enterprise adoption. The homepage confirms it led Harbinger's $60M Series A and that a partner, Ryan Clinton, joined Harbinger's board.
Recent Activity
Fund II closed in December 2025 and was announced on 2026-04-30 at more than $180M in commitments, oversubscribed. It combines Ridgeline Ventures Fund II LP and Fund II-S LP. Fund II-S is part of the first cohort of SBIC Critical Technology licensees approved under the U.S. Office of Strategic Capital, which brings SBA leverage. Corporate LPs include FedEx and Cisco Investments. Fund I was $52M, announced in October 2022, with FedEx, AutoZone and Dollar General as strategic LPs. The firm appears to be actively deploying Fund II.
Portfolio Highlights
The site claims 30+ companies. Named highlights: Harbinger (medium-duty electric vehicles and modular power; $358M raised, FedEx as Series C co-lead and first fleet customer), Altana (supply chain visibility for governments and enterprises; the site says valuation grew from about $40M to $1B in under two years), Q-CTRL (quantum infrastructure software), AMESA, aisquared, Knox, SatVu, Loft Orbital, Gilmour Space, Opentrons, Neural Magic, StreamSets and Eclypsium (marked exited on the site). Other logos on the wall include Zenith AI, ANVL, Auxon, Blueshift, Composabl, Eion, Harbr, ICON, implicit, MachineMetrics, Mesomat, Multiscale Technologies, Myriota, Planet Watchers, Psionic, Replicated, Spell, Tread and Wallaroo.
Team
- Ryan Clinton, General Partner: West Point graduate, served in the U.S. Army including combat deployment, MBA, based in Memphis. Sits on Harbinger's board.
- Ben Walker, General Partner: West Point graduate who served with Clinton, MAIS, Bay Area based.
- Andrew McMahon, General Partner: Former Obama administration official, MPP, Washington, D.C. based, an Alchemist Accelerator portfolio mentor.
The three co-founded the firm in 2019 and together claim over 25 years inside the environments their portfolio companies must win in.
Decision Process
Three equal general partners, so a partnership model. No decision timeline is published.
Founder Preferences
Founders building durable technology for the industrial base who sell to demanding commercial and government customers, and who value help with enterprise and defense go-to-market: introductions, pilots, customers, advisors and hires. The firm says it builds alongside its companies.
Geographic Focus
United States, with offices in Memphis, Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles. Portfolio includes companies outside the U.S. (Q-CTRL, SatVu, Loft Orbital, Gilmour Space, Myriota), so geography is not a hard filter.
Gaps
The firm's own domain ridgeline.vc did not load in the research reader at first; the www host did. The Business Wire Fund II release could not be read directly, so fund facts come from CityBiz and Pulse 2 coverage of the same release. There is no dedicated portfolio or team page; the homepage logo wall carried the portfolio. Check sizes and per-company stages are not disclosed.
