Seaplane Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
Seaplane Ventures is a high-conviction, early-stage venture firm in Austin, Texas, founded in 2022 by Joe Magyer. It backs seed-stage US startups whose business models are built around network effects and recurring revenue. In practice that has meant two clusters: network-effects marketplaces and platforms (Ruck, Upkid, Atrios, Packsmith, Construex) and AI-native software (micro1, Hyperspell, Veria Labs, Super.AI, Trata). The firm describes itself as flexible on how it participates and says it will provide a startup's first institutional capital, invest between rounds, or co-invest in rounds led by others.
The organizing idea is concentration. Magyer's essay "Investing with Conviction in Venture Capital" argues that a smaller portfolio means fewer investments needed to return the fund, more diligence per deal, more time to support each founder (he contrasts roughly 60 hours a year per founder with about 8 for a spray-and-pray investor), and larger positions in the fund's best companies. He also cites evidence that smaller and first-time funds outperform larger ones.
Stage Focus
Pre-seed and seed, with an occasional seed-plus or follow-on. LinkedIn's 2025 summary lists 7 new investments and 2 follow-ons, of which 6 were Seed and 1 Seed+. Third-party profiles also describe the firm as investing between rounds.
Check Size
The firm reported an average check of about $215K in 2025, with a median ARR of $170K among the companies it backed (ranging from zero to multi-million). Thunder lists an average range of $25K to $1M and a sweet spot near $500K. Better Auth was its largest 2025 investment.
Lead Tendency
Mixed. The firm says it can provide first institutional capital or co-invest behind other leads. Public round data for most deals shows it as a participant alongside other seed funds rather than the named lead, and Thunder says it occasionally leads.

Team
- Joe Magyer, Founder and Managing Partner. Full-time angel investor before launching Seaplane in 2022. Co-founded Lakehouse Capital in Sydney in 2016 and served as its Chief Investment Officer, managing a growth-equity book of several hundred million US dollars before stepping back in October 2021 and moving to Austin. Hosts the Investing in Startups podcast.
- LinkedIn shows a small supporting team (roughly four people), but no titles are published on the firm's site.
Decision Process
Solo managing partner. Magyer makes the investment decisions and runs diligence himself, which is consistent with the stated concentrated strategy. Deal flow comes from outbound sourcing, referrals and inbound pitches via the site's Pitch page.
Founder Preferences
Founders building network-effects or recurring-revenue businesses with early commercial traction. The firm backs small teams (1 to 3 founders) and has been comfortable with pre-revenue companies as well as those with multi-million ARR. It values founders who are easy to work with, since it positions itself on time spent supporting founders.
Geographic Focus
US startups only. The office is in Austin, but 2025 investments were concentrated in founders based in San Francisco and New York.
