Service Ventures (Service Credit Union) Research
Overview
Service Ventures is the independent venture capital arm of Service Credit Union (Service Federal Credit Union), headquartered at 3003 Lafayette Road in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The credit union was founded in 1957 as Portsmouth Air Force Base Credit Union and is now the largest credit union in New England, with roughly $6.6B in assets, about 384,000 members, 52 branches and a membership that spans New England and Germany. Service Ventures was founded in 2024 and publicly launched on June 23-24, 2025. It operates through a CUSO (credit union service organization) holding structure, created to separate the financial side of running a venture fund from the day-to-day operations of the credit union. Its own website is service.vc; the parent site is servicecu.org.
Investment Thesis
The stated mission is to fuel the next generation of credit union solutions. Service Ventures invests in early-stage financial technology companies that align with the credit union philosophy of people helping people, and that improve interactions, accessibility and operational excellence across the credit union landscape. General Partner Brian Regan describes the fund's primary goal as expediting the execution of Service Credit Union's own strategy, which means internal buy-in from the credit union is a requirement for any investment. The first fund spent most of its effort on current business pain points (lending growth, fraud, card services, deposit management, member engagement). The focus is now shifting to longer-term items expected in the next five to ten years, with blockchain for operational efficiency named as one example.
Success is measured on three vectors: internal efficiency and income generation (lower loan acquisition cost, more interchange income, less fraud loss), direct value to members (for example ScribeUp's subscription management), and traditional asset returns. Regan has been explicit that the investments are made with members' deposits, so the fund needs meaningful financial returns and does heavier operating diligence than a typical vendor evaluation, including tracking sales targets and attainment.
Stage Focus and Check Size
The fund invests early. Regan says it has backed eight early-stage CUSOs. Rounds seen in public sources are early-stage and Series A, such as participation in ScribeUp's $13M Series A led by Curql in October 2026. Check sizes are not disclosed anywhere we could find, and no fund size has been published.
Lead Tendency
The public record shows participation more than leading. In ScribeUp's Series A, Curql led and Service Ventures participated alongside Mucker Capital. Several investments are structured through company-specific CUSOs (Fias CUSO LLC, ModernFi CUSO, ScribeUp CUSO) that give credit unions a path to co-own and adopt the product. Lead tendency is therefore marked unknown.

The partners page lists twelve companies: Casap (AI dispute automation and first-party fraud), Confer (consumer lending engagement), Fias (AI app platform), FileFlex (zero-trust data access), Larky (member engagement), ModernFi CUSO (deposit management), Posh AI (conversational AI for credit unions), Saris AI (AI workflow agents for lending and back office), ScribeUp (bill and subscription management), Silvur (retirement planning), Tablender (lending), and WealthCabinet (embedded wealth technology for credit unions). Team and Decision Process
- Brian Regan, General Partner: joined in 2024. Co-founded Strake, a public cloud cost optimization company, and earlier worked in VMware's Security Business Unit on mergers and acquisitions, partnerships and business planning, with finance experience at VMware Carbon Black.
- Service Credit Union C-suite: acts as the Service Ventures board and prioritizes the business areas where solutions are needed. CEO David Araujo is the sponsor of the program and a long-time early partner to credit union fintechs such as Posh and Sandbox Banking.
Decisions run through the GP and the credit union executive board, so a strong internal sponsor and a clear use case inside Service Credit Union matter more than a typical VC pitch.
Founder Preferences
Regan's advice to founders is to understand how credit unions differ from banks (most have under $250M in assets), to stay focused on the first two or three credit union clients, prove value quickly, and rely on the industry's high word-of-mouth virality. He stresses short time to value and minimal integration burden. Ethical, member-first solutions are the stated filter.
Geographic Focus
The fund is based in New Hampshire, but its investments are US credit union industry plays rather than geographically bound. Portfolio companies are located in New York, New Mexico and elsewhere. The thesis is defined by customer (credit unions and community financial institutions), not by region.
Gaps
Fund size, check sizes, and exact dates for several earlier investments are not public. Stage tags are drawn from the firm's stated early-stage focus and the few rounds that are documented.
