Spectrum Equity Research
Investment Thesis
Spectrum Equity is a growth equity firm founded in 1994 and headquartered in Boston, with additional offices in San Francisco and London. For more than 30 years the firm has partnered with a select group of businesses across multiple sectors; today it is focused on software, artificial intelligence, and data businesses. Spectrum invests in emerging and current category leaders with proven value propositions, deep customer advocacy, scalable operating leverage, and resilient recurring revenue. The firm describes itself as investing "more than capital," aiming to build productive partnerships with portfolio companies and enduring relationships with founders and management teams, often acting as a connector into a curated network of expert peers and resources.
Stage Focus
Spectrum operates exclusively at the growth equity stage. The firm is often the first institutional investor in a company and takes a flexible approach to structure, governance, and ownership, including leading minority recapitalizations and full change-of-control transactions.
Check Size
Investment size is generally between $25 million and $250 million, with additional capacity reserved for follow-on investments. The firm can flex its capital structure to meet a range of partner needs, from shareholder liquidity to growth capital for operational initiatives.
Lead Tendency
Spectrum frequently leads or is the sole institutional investor in a transaction (e.g., Quavo's $300M investment, WorkFlex's investment, splose's Series A), though it also participates alongside co-investors in some rounds (e.g., SavvyMoney alongside PSG and Canapi Ventures).
Recent Activity
Spectrum is actively deploying its tenth fund, Spectrum Equity X, L.P. ("Fund X"), which closed at a hard cap of $2 billion in July 2022 alongside a $200M Discretionary Overage Program. Recent investments include: Quavo Fraud & Disputes ($300M growth investment, July 2025), CyberCube (more than $180M as a new cornerstone investor, October 2025), a continued investment in SavvyMoney ($225M round co-led by PSG and Canapi Ventures, October 2025), Poppins Payroll (household payroll compliance, September 2025), splose (AI-enabled Allied Health practice management platform, ~AUD $46M Series A, February 2026), and WorkFlex (global mobility compliance infrastructure, March 2026).

Decision Process
As an institutional growth equity firm managing $2 billion in its current fund, Spectrum operates with a formal investment process led by its senior Managing Directors, consistent with an investment-committee structure typical of firms at this scale.
Founder Preferences
Spectrum favors founder-led, capital-efficient businesses built for the long game, mission-critical software that becomes "systems of record" for its customers, and founders who value humility, collaboration, and original (even contrarian) thinking. The firm has a stated pattern of backing bootstrapped founders with personal origin stories and family-run businesses built on trust.
Geographic Focus
Primarily the United States (Boston and San Francisco offices) and the United Kingdom/Europe (London office, which Parag Khandelwal opened), with an expanding footprint in Australia (splose, iSelect) and other English-speaking markets.
