Triple Impact Capital Research
Investment Thesis
Triple Impact Capital (TIC) is a mission-driven early-stage venture fund built on the belief that "the most pressing challenges of today will produce the most important companies of tomorrow." The firm backs founders who embed positive environmental and/or societal impact directly into their revenue models, rather than treating impact as a side effect of the business. TIC's stated view is that mission-driven founders hold a competitive advantage, and the firm concentrates its capital at the earliest, highest-conviction stage of a company's life. The fund invests at the intersection of technology, impact and AI across three focus areas: Sustainable Innovation (circular economy, carbon reduction and capture, green supply chain), Healthtech (digital health and health tech infrastructure, vertical care, behavioral health) and Economic Opportunity (workforce development, up-skilling and education).
Stage Focus
TIC invests exclusively at the pre-seed and seed stages. The firm typically writes the first or an early institutional check and has both led rounds outright (BuyWander's $2M seed, UpsideHōM's oversubscribed seed) and co-led or participated alongside other seed investors (Cephable's split seed round with Founder Collective and Hyperplane, Discernis's seed led by Newfund Capital). TIC also continues to support portfolio companies into growth rounds as a returning investor, as seen in Bandana's and Upside's later raises.
Check Size
Evidence from disclosed rounds points to a typical check in the roughly $250K–$2M range at pre-seed/seed, with TIC solo-funding BuyWander's $2M seed round and taking a smaller position within Cephable's $4.6M split seed alongside two other co-leads.
Lead Tendency
Mixed. TIC has led rounds (BuyWander seed, April 2025; UpsideHōM seed, July 2021) and has also participated as a co-investor or returning investor in later rounds it did not lead (Bandana Series-stage raise, Aug 2024; Upside Series A, June 2026; Discernis seed, Aug 2026; Cephable seed, co-led October 2024).
Recent Activity
TIC is actively deploying out of its second fund. Fund I (2021 vintage) raised $17.5M and backed more than 50 companies including Capture6 and Juniper. Fund II went to market in 2024 targeting $50M for continued early-stage bets in health, climate and economic mobility, and reached a first close in December 2024; SEC Form ADV filings show roughly $13.8M raised toward that target as of an October 2025 amendment. Notable 2025–2026 activity includes leading BuyWander's $2M seed (April 2025), co-leading Cephable's $4.6M seed (October 2024), participating in Discernis's $2.5M seed (August 2026), participating in Upside's $20M Series A (June 2026), and participating in BuyWander's $21M Series A (September 2026) as the company scaled nationally. One portfolio company, the European sustainability-data platform Inoqo, merged with Mondra in February 2026.
Portfolio Highlights
Portfolio companies span TIC's three focus areas: Bandana (job-search platform for hourly workers), Cephable (AI-driven accessibility software), Metriport (open-source healthcare data interoperability API, a Y Combinator company), Upside/UpsideHōM (AI-supported housing-stability platform for healthcare payers and employers), Capture6 (saltwater-based carbon removal and freshwater technology), Kanvas Biosciences (microbiome imaging and therapeutics platform spun out of Cornell), BuyWander (circular-economy auction marketplace for retail returns), Discernis (AI-native e-discovery for legal teams), and Inoqo (food-industry sustainability intelligence platform, merged with Mondra in 2026). Additional named portfolio companies from third-party trackers include Bright and Juniper (enterprise software for behavioral health and physical-therapy providers).
Team
Triple Impact Capital was co-founded by two General Partners who met twenty years ago investing together in Cornell's Big Red Venture Fund, where they backed Pacific Biosciences. Justin Smithline is a three-time startup founder turned early-stage investor; he spent nearly a decade at Entrepreneurs Roundtable Accelerator (ERA) in New York, the last four-plus years as a full-time General Partner, investing in and mentoring over 100 companies. He has also been an active angel investor for 15+ years in companies including Happy Baby (acquired by Danone), White Ops (acquired by Goldman Sachs) and unicorn Thirty Madison. Bennett Thomas spent his career at the intersection of finance and corporate sustainability; he founded the EarthView sustainability platform at NYSE-listed Hersha Hospitality Trust in 2009, growing it into a nationally recognized ESG program (ranked #1 most sustainable lodging REIT four times) while helping raise and refinance $4B of debt and equity capital.
Decision Process
Two-person GP partnership; both Smithline and Thomas are General Partners and co-founders, consistent with a partnership-style decision process rather than a solo GP or formal investment committee.
Founder Preferences
TIC explicitly favors mission-driven founders who have built impact directly into their revenue model rather than as a philanthropic add-on. Post-investment, the firm runs a "Foundation to Scale" program to help founders reach product/market fit, sharpen go-to-market strategy and raise follow-on rounds, plus an Executive Network of industry leaders and functional experts.
Geographic Focus
Primarily U.S.-based investing (7 of 8 tracked first investments per Tracxn), with at least one international investment in Austria (the European sustainability platform Inoqo). The firm itself operates out of San Francisco and Philadelphia, with GPs based in Palo Alto and Philadelphia respectively.
Inbound Process
Unlike many seed funds that rely solely on warm introductions, TIC maintains an open "Submit Your Business" intake form (via Airtable) linked directly from its homepage and navigation, alongside a dedicated [email protected] inbox for investment inquiries.
