Valo Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
Valo Ventures is a thesis-driven venture firm with offices in San Francisco and Portland, Maine. Its stated focus is the line where creative entrepreneurs and emerging technologies meet economic, geopolitical and environmental trends. LinkedIn describes the firm as investing in physical AI, energy and materials in North America and Europe. The firm frames its mission as backing a regenerative economy, one where the end condition is better than the original state, while generating attractive returns.
Valo organizes its work around three investment themes. Digitization covers an ecosystem of data-centric technologies that reduce friction, optimize planning and improve decision-making. Decarbonization covers emerging energy technologies enabling widespread electrification and the elimination of greenhouse gas emissions. Adaptation covers innovation to thrive on a warming planet with constrained natural resources, touching housing, food, transportation, energy and insurance.
Stage Focus
The About page says Valo looks for Seed- and Series A-stage entrepreneurs applying powerful technologies to well-defined problems in the physical world. The ideal company has demonstrated technology readiness and is poised to scale commercially. Third-party data (Tracxn) says the firm primarily invests in Series A rounds. Earlier press on its debut fund described Series A through C, so the stage has narrowed toward early stage.
Check Size
Valo does not publish check sizes. A third-party aggregator (vcboom) lists $2M to $10M, which fits a Seed and Series A fund with follow-on reserves. Treat this as low confidence.
Lead Tendency
The firm describes itself as a collaborative investor working with fellow investors and corporate LPs. It does not state whether it leads. Lead tendency is recorded as unknown.
Recent Activity
General Robotics, an AI company building an intelligence grid for physical AI, is shown as the latest investment on the portfolio page (added around May 2026). Portfolio news in 2025 and 2026 includes Basecamp Research raising $140M (Sep 2026), Steady Energy going public in Finland via a merger with $82M in fresh backing (Sep and Oct 2026), Visby Medical receiving FDA clearance for an at-home multi-virus PCR test (Aug 2026), Inlyte Energy shipping iron-sodium batteries (Aug 2026) and announcing an 80 MWh battery project (Oct 2026), and PlanetiQ winning NOAA contracts. Fund status is recorded as actively deploying, with moderate confidence. Tracxn showed no new investments logged in 2026 as of October, though it lags the firm's own site.
Fund History
Fortum committed EUR 150 million to Valo in December 2018, over ten years. The debut fund closed at $175 million in June 2019 under founder Scott Tierney, a co-founder of Google Capital (now CapitalG). PitchBook lists a Valo Ventures II vehicle. Fund II size and close date were not verified.
