Vitruvian Partners Research
Investment Thesis
Vitruvian Partners is a London-headquartered international investment firm, founded in 2006 by a team of former Apax Partners, BC Partners, and Bridgepoint Capital investors (founding partners Mike Risman, Ian Riley, Toby Wyles, Mark Harford, and David Nahama). The firm brands itself around "Empowering Excellence" and describes its mandate as backing "the most ambitious and talented entrepreneurs and higher growth companies to achieve their goals." Vitruvian focuses on what it calls "Dynamic Situations" — asset-light, higher-growth, middle-market businesses undergoing rapid change — and organizes its thesis around seven investment thematics publicized on its site: securing the digital world, advancing healthcare, next generation finance, building virtual markets, enabling e-commerce, redefining productivity, and building global connections. It is a control-centric investor: the majority of deals are majority or lead-minority growth buyouts rather than passive minority checks.
Sector Focus
Vitruvian is a generalist growth/buyout investor with concentrated activity in: cybersecurity (Darktrace, Bitdefender), healthcare and healthcare data/marketing (Healthcare at Home, CRF Health, DeepIntent), fintech and payments (Ebury), enterprise software and developer tooling (SnapLogic, Snow Software, Options Technology), e-commerce and online marketplaces (Farfetch, Vestiaire Collective, Just Eat), travel and consumer marketplaces (Skyscanner, OAG, EasyPark, Sykes Cottages), and a growing AI-native software book (AlphaSense, Cognition AI, Aquabyte).
Stage Focus
Vitruvian invests at growth and buyout stage rather than early-stage venture. Per its own "Approach" page, it targets companies typically valued between €75m and €4bn+, i.e., well past product-market fit and into scaled growth or pre-IPO territory. It does both primary growth capital (minority or majority) and full growth buyouts, including public-to-private transactions.
Check Size
Vitruvian states it invests between €40m and €600m+ per company. Recent disclosed check sizes bear this out: a $637m strategic investment in DeepIntent (2025), a $350m participation in AlphaSense's Series F at a $7.5bn valuation (2026), and a $1bn+ Series D in Cognition AI at a $26bn valuation (2026) alongside Lux Capital, General Catalyst, and 8VC. Smaller platform bets exist too (e.g., a $35m investment in Moonfare in 2022), showing the firm will also write smaller strategic checks outside its typical buyout range.
Lead Tendency
Vitruvian frequently leads or is the majority/control investor in its deals — e.g., it "acquired a majority stake" in Smartling (2026) and Aquabyte (2025), and led AlphaSense's 2026 round and Trustpilot's 2015 Series D. In some large syndicated late-stage rounds (e.g., Cognition AI's Series D, led by Lux Capital/General Catalyst/8VC) it participates as one of several institutional investors rather than as lead.
Recent Activity
Fund V (Vitruvian Investment Partnership V, "VIP V") closed at its €7.3bn hard cap in September 2024, beating its target by nearly €1bn — the firm's largest fund to date and evidence of continued active deployment. Notable 2024–2026 activity: a significant investment in trading-infrastructure provider Options Technology (Oct 2024); a $637m strategic investment in ad-tech/healthcare marketing platform DeepIntent (Sep 2025); a majority-stake acquisition of Norwegian aquaculture AI firm Aquabyte (Dec 2025); a $350m participation in AlphaSense's Series F (Jun 2026); a $1bn+ participation in Cognition AI's Series D (May 2026); and a majority-stake acquisition of AI translation platform Smartling from Battery Ventures (Sep 2026). Vitruvian also trimmed its stake in public holding Trustpilot via a secondary placement in July 2024.

Notable current and past investments include Darktrace (self-learning cybersecurity AI, featured on Vitruvian's homepage), Bitdefender (cybersecurity), Farfetch (luxury fashion marketplace, later IPO'd), Skyscanner (travel metasearch, acquired by Ctrip), Trustpilot (review platform, IPO'd on LSE), Just Eat (food delivery marketplace, IPO'd), Vestiaire Collective (pre-owned luxury marketplace), Ebury (fintech/FX for SMEs), SnapLogic (integration software), Snow Software (software asset management), Sykes Cottages (vacation rentals), OAG (aviation data), EasyPark (parking marketplace), Pindrop (voice security, 2018), AlphaSense (AI-powered market intelligence), Cognition AI (maker of autonomous coding agent Devin), DeepIntent (healthcare ad-tech), Aquabyte (aquaculture AI), Smartling (AI translation), and Moonfare (private-markets investing platform).

Decision Process
Vitruvian describes itself as "controlled and owned by its partners," making decisions "through consensus in an open and transparent manner," and explicitly rejects heavy bureaucracy — portfolio company founders deal directly with decision-makers rather than layers of committee.
Founder Preferences
Vitruvian's "Principles of Partnership" state it only backs "strong, entrepreneurial management teams," taking an "active and supportive, partnership-led approach," and looks to build genuine, high-alignment partnerships — the firm invests a significant portion of partners' own personal capital alongside fund capital.
Geographic Focus
Vitruvian is headquartered in London and invests across Europe, the U.S., and Asia, with a network of offices in London, Munich, Madrid, Miami, Mumbai, San Francisco, Shanghai, Singapore, Stockholm, Luxembourg, and Dubai. Historically EMEA-weighted (its own compliance disclosures describe it as focused "predominantly across the EMEA region"), it has expanded meaningfully into U.S. growth deals (DeepIntent, AlphaSense, Cognition AI, Smartling are all U.S.-headquartered).
