WillowTree Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
WillowTree Ventures is an early-stage fund investing in what it calls "Autonomous Intelligence for Financial Services & Commerce." The firm argues that AI is driving a fundamental shift that will transform financial services and commerce from the ground up, and it invests across the whole AI stack: from foundational infrastructure, through enterprise agents, to full-stack vertical applications that reimagine finance and commerce. Its thesis page splits the focus into two layers. The first is vertical applications, covering financial services (payments, banking, wealth management, insurance) and commerce (retail, e-commerce, platforms, supply chain). The second is what it calls the autonomous intelligence architecture: context (state, intent, memory), agents (orchestration, controls, execution), data (events, identity, governance) and transactions (rails, settlement, reconciliation).
The partners publish regular market commentary: an August 2025 Mergermarket video interview with GP Harshul Sanghi on backing AI-first startups, essays on DeepSeek and AI efficiency (January 2025), reasoning models (October 2024), the AI investment landscape (April 2024), a 2024 AI outlook, and enterprise GenAI foundations (October 2023).
Stage Focus and Check Size
The website states Pre-Seed to Series A with checks of $500K to $3M. Managing Partner Rohit Bodas's LinkedIn profile describes $1M to $3M checks, and the firm's LinkedIn page describes pre-seed and seed rounds. Third-party data (Tracxn) shows mostly seed participation, with one Series A. In practice the firm is a seed-stage fund that participates in rounds alongside larger leads.
Lead Tendency
Public evidence suggests the firm both leads and follows. In Fibr AI's $7.5M seed, Accel led and WillowTree participated. Press and third-party listings show it taking part in rounds such as a roughly $5M seed for Valence. Lead tendency is recorded as "both" with modest confidence.
Recent Activity and Fund Status
The firm was founded in 2022 by Harshul Sanghi, Rohit Bodas and Venkat Varadachary, announced as an AI-first seed-stage fund. A March 2025 VC Wire report said WillowTree Investments was raising its third fund. The current portfolio page lists about 29 active companies, several marked as exits (for example Fireside, Hyperface, Nimbbl, Valence and Orum-linked history). Recent portfolio names include Fibr AI, Predibase, Distributional, Gable AI, Mindgard, LangDB and RapidFire AI. The firm appears to be actively deploying.
Portfolio Highlights
The current portfolio spans AI infrastructure and tooling (Predibase, Distributional, LangDB, RapidFire AI, Gable AI, Mindgard, WideField Security), fintech and financial infrastructure (Belvo, Capchase, Fairplay AI, Inai, Upswing, Telemetry, Tensec, Kurrent) and commerce and growth (Fibr AI, Firmly, Fishtail). A separate "Prior Investments" section shows notable companies from the team's earlier investing, including Stripe, Plaid, Bill.com, Toast, Instacart, FalconX, Groww, Turo, Next Insurance, Clip, Trulioo, Extend, Signifyd, BioCatch, BigCommerce, Guideline, Menlo Security and Orum. These are drawn from the team's history, largely at American Express Ventures, and should not be read as WillowTree fund positions. The site claims 200+ companies invested since 2012, 13 IPOs and 23 unicorns across the partners' combined careers.

Founder Preferences
The firm wants exceptional AI founders at the earliest stages whose products can sell to large financial institutions and commerce players. A founder testimonial calls WillowTree an "extreme value add investor" for account strategy, mapping and introductions in the financial industry. Founders with a clear enterprise buyer in banking, payments, insurance or retail fit best.
Value Add and Corporate Access
The Playbook page says the firm is backed by multiple corporations across financial services, representing roughly $16T in deposits and AUM, $4.1T in payment volume, 178M consumers, 42M insurance policies, $600B in lending volume and 20M SMBs across 150 countries. It offers product-market-fit guidance from Fortune 500 buyer insight, warm introductions to enterprise decision-makers, structured support for complex sales cycles, and capital from corporates, institutions and executives.
Geographic Focus
The site states no geographic restriction. Portfolio companies sit in the US, India (Groww, Nimbbl, Hyperface, Upswing), Latin America (Belvo), Europe and Israel. Most are US-based or have US go-to-market. Headquarters location is not stated on the site; third-party sources associate the firm with the US (New York area). AUM is not published.
