Liacare is a camera-free nightlight that only speaks up when Mom falls. A warm light for the bedroom or bathroom carries a 60 GHz radar that detects a fall, asks her out loud if she's okay, and calls the family only if there's no answer. No camera, nothing to wear or charge. On a normal day, the family sees nothing at all. Founded by a brother and sister after our grandfather fell in his bathroom at night and lay there until morning. 14 million older Americans fall every year. Among people over 90, 80% cannot get up on their own and 30% lie on the floor for an hour or more, and in most of those cases a call button was available and never pressed (BMJ 2008). Buttons only work if she wears one, remembers it, and can press it. Cameras never make it into the bedroom. The adult child ends up as the alarm system.
A nightlight, not a medical device. Radar detects the fall where it happens, the device asks first, the family is called only when she doesn't answer. She gets a light she'd want anyway.
