201 Ventures — Firm Research
Overview
201 Ventures is a Madrid-based, solo-GP early-stage venture firm founded by Eric Slesinger, a former CIA officer. Its stated mission, on its own site, is "to advance freedom and autonomy in Europe." The firm backs pre-seed and seed companies and says it leans "into technical risk, ambition, and a service mindset." The site tagline is "freedom++". Fund I closed at $22M (announced publicly in April 2025, with the fund described elsewhere as launched in January 2024), and the NATO Innovation Fund is a significant LP. In June 2026 trade press reported that Slesinger is planning a second defence fund.
Investment Thesis
The thesis is defence, intelligence, security, resilience, and dual-use deep tech in Europe. Slesinger's framing is "gray zone competition": activity between diplomacy and war that he expects to play out at scale in Europe for the next couple of decades, creating market dislocations (government acting as a sovereign buyer, price inefficiencies) that he views as a source of alpha. The NATO Innovation Fund announcement lists the solution space as hypersonics, biosecurity, subsurface mapping, maritime sensing, and Arctic autonomy. In interviews he adds advanced manufacturing, the electromagnetic spectrum, the subsurface (subsea and subterranean), and in-orbit manoeuvring as emerging "functional domains." He invests in both defence-first and dual-use companies but wants founders to be clear which side they start on and not to straddle both early.
Stage Focus
Pre-seed and seed. He likes talking to founders before the company exists. 201 continues to appear as an existing investor in later rounds (Delian Series A in July 2025, Hypersonica Series A in February 2026, Stark's June 2026 round), which suggests modest pro-rata follow-on participation, though the fund's size limits how much.
Check Size
Not disclosed. With a $22M fund and a portfolio of roughly 20 companies (16 named on the site plus several marked "[unannounced]"), initial checks are likely in the low hundreds of thousands, but this is an inference and is not stored as a structured field.
Lead Tendency
Both. 201 led the first funding round of Polar Mist (Swedish maritime drones, April 2025). It was a follower in Isembard's £7M seed (led by Notion Capital), Hypersonica's pre-seed alongside General Catalyst, Ionlace's pre-seed with Acme Capital and Heartcore, and Deep Earth's pre-seed with Inflection.
Recent Activity
- Feb 2026: participated as an existing investor in Hypersonica's €23.3M Series A led by Plural.
- Jun 2026: portfolio company Stark (Berlin loitering munitions) raised about €500M led by Sequoia and Founders Fund at a valuation above €3.5B; 201 Ventures is listed among its investors.
- Jul 2025: repeat backer in Delian Alliance Industries' Series A (led by Marathon).
- Apr 2025: led Polar Mist's first round; joined Isembard's seed.
- Jun 2026: reported to be planning Fund II. Fund status: actively deploying, with a second fund being planned.
Portfolio Highlights
From 201.vc: Statecraft, Stark, Onodrim, Agon, Zydro, CX2, Polar Mist, Arctic R&D, Isembard, Andrenam, Deep Earth, Hypersonica, Ionlace, Delian Alliance Industries, plus five "[unannounced]" positions. Stark is the standout mark (above €3.5B valuation in 2026). Hypersonica (European hypersonic strike), Delian (Athens surveillance towers against autonomous threats), CX2 (electronic warfare), Isembard (distributed precision manufacturing), and Polar Mist (maritime autonomy) are other notable names. Geography spans Germany, Greece, Sweden, the UK, and wider Europe. Slesinger is also listed as a co-founder of Arctic Research and Development (2025), so that position may be a studio-style build rather than a pure investment.
Team
Eric Slesinger, Founder and General Partner (also styled Managing Partner). Stanford mechanical engineering, Harvard Business School, about six years at the CIA building gadgets and software for officers, time at In-Q-Tel. American and Italian; moved to Madrid in 2022. Founded the European Defense Investor Network (hundreds of investors) and organises the European Defense Tech Summit. A venture fellow focused on government relations has been noted on LinkedIn but is not confirmed on the firm site.
Decision Process
Solo GP. Decisions rest with Slesinger, which should mean fast turnaround, though no timeline is published.
Founder Preferences
Speed, hunger, and pace of learning; evidence of past excellence (he says "top 0.1% worldwide at what they've done"); ability to hire, raise, set a vision, and execute; eyes-wide-open understanding of defence realities (primes, country selection, interpreting "battle-tested" claims); clear storytelling; and advanced thinking on go-to-market, procurement, and lobbying from day one. Service orientation matters to him.
Geographic Focus
Europe, with portfolio in Germany, Greece, Sweden, the UK, and the Nordics. A US company does not appear to fit unless it is building for European sovereignty.
Gaps
Check size and fund II size are not public. Statecraft's identity (statecraft.ai) was not independently confirmed beyond the firm's own link. Five portfolio positions are unannounced.
