Investment Thesis
AJVC (also known as "A Junior VC") is a SEBI-registered, sector-agnostic pre-seed venture capital fund investing exclusively in India. Founded by Aviral Bhatnagar, a former Venture Highway investor (Venture Highway was acquired by General Catalyst in 2025), the fund grew out of "Life of A Junior VC," a startup and VC-focused blog and newsletter Bhatnagar started roughly six years before formalizing the fund. AJVC positions itself as "India's most approachable pre-seed fund," built around removing friction from the earliest fundraising experience: a 3-minute application, a yes/no reply within 48 hours, a data-driven evaluation form, and a final investment decision within a week of a partner call.
The fund is explicitly sector-agnostic, betting on founder quality and market opportunity over a fixed vertical thesis. Its stated mission is to back "the courageous to become entrepreneurs," with a strong emphasis on first-time founders, solo founders, and teams that are pre-incorporation or pre-product.
Sector Focus
AJVC's portfolio spans a wide range of verticals rather than a narrow thesis: consumer D2C brands, fintech and financial infrastructure, applied AI/agentic tooling for enterprise workflows, healthtech and wellness, apparel and fashion-tech, quick commerce, govtech, and even early defense robotics. AI is a recurring thread across many portfolio companies (fraud/AML detection, market research, sales intelligence, recruitment voice agents), but AJVC does not brand itself as an AI-only fund.
Stage Focus
AJVC invests exclusively at pre-seed. Per its FAQ, companies must not have previously raised more than ₹1 crore to be eligible, and applicants can be pre-incorporation, pre-product, or working from a paper plan. Solo founders are explicitly welcomed.
Check Size
AJVC uses standard, non-negotiable terms across its entire portfolio: ₹1.5 crore (approximately $180,000) for 9% equity. Management has stated this uniformity is intentional, to remove back-and-forth negotiation and speed up the process for founders.
Lead Tendency
AJVC is typically the first institutional check into a company and structures a full, standard round itself rather than following other investors, consistent with a "leads" tendency at the pre-seed stage.
Recent Activity
AJVC closed its maiden fund in early 2025 at roughly ₹200 crore, more than double its original ₹100 crore target, and considered exercising a ₹50 crore greenshoe option. As of September 2026, reporting describes the fund's active corpus at approximately ₹165 crore, having backed more than 35 companies with a stated plan to reach 85+ companies over the fund's life. In September 2026, Novastar Partners (an India-focused private markets investment platform founded by Dhruv Jhunjhunwala) made an undisclosed LP investment directly into the AJVC fund vehicle, aimed at gaining exposure to India's pre-seed ecosystem across AI, healthcare, deeptech, consumer technology, and brands. The fund continues to deploy at a steady pace, with a stated target of 12-15 new investments per year.
Portfolio Highlights
AJVC's portfolio includes over 20 named companies discovered on its public portfolio page, spanning consumer brands (Mithila Foods, MoroMaa, Bubble Me, Caredale), apparel and fashion-tech (Nuyug, Thread Factory, Slayd, Iztri), applied AI/enterprise tooling (TruFides for fraud/AML, Alchemic for AI market research, Chop Finance for AI accounting, Dialflo for AI voice recruitment, Faraday for AI email, Mindcase for decision intelligence, Multibagg AI for stock research), services and quick commerce (GaadiMech, Handy Panda, Jaagruk Bharat, Figtree), fintech (Finanjo), and early defense robotics (Beijan). A number of additional portfolio logos on the site are unnamed/stealth-stage companies spanning workflow automation, B2B sales intelligence, cross-border recruitment, sales coaching AI, food brands, voice AI evaluation, skincare, senior healthcare, sales-talent hiring, dialysis care, furniture, spiritual programs, and multi-agent customer support.
Team
- Aviral Bhatnagar, Founder & Managing Partner — IIT Bombay (Engineering Physics) and IIM Ahmedabad graduate. Previously an investor at Venture Highway (acquired by General Catalyst in 2025), where he invested across SaaS, consumer, and AI. Founded the "A Junior VC" newsletter/community (500,000+ audience) roughly six years before formalizing the fund, and authored "A Billion Bets: The Making of India's Start-Up Ecosystem" (Penguin), with a foreword from CaratLane founder Mithun Sacheti. Bhatnagar operates as the fund's solo General Partner managing investments and the portfolio.
Decision Process
AJVC runs a solo-GP decision process: Bhatnagar personally reviews every application and detailed follow-up form, and makes the final investment decision himself following a partner call, typically within a week of that call and roughly two weeks from initial application to signed term sheet.
Founder Preferences
AJVC explicitly welcomes first-time founders, solo founders, and teams without an incorporated company or shipped product, provided they have not already raised more than ₹1 crore. The fund emphasizes data-driven evaluation over pedigree or warm introductions, and applications are accepted directly through its website with no warm-intro requirement.
Geographic Focus
AJVC invests exclusively in India-incorporated entities (with rare exceptions for Singapore or U.S.-incorporated structures), and its portfolio spans a wide range of Indian cities including Bengaluru, Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Jaipur, Hyderabad, Guwahati, Ranchi, Chandigarh, Pune, Gurugram, and Hisar.
