Althing Ventures
Althing Ventures is a new, Raleigh, North Carolina based pre-seed and seed venture fund launched by General Partner Daniel Russell. Russell announced the launch publicly on LinkedIn in early 2026, saying the fund would hold a first close shortly afterward and begin making initial investments soon after. The firm's tagline is 'Fueling the infrastructure of the AI era.' Its website lists a single General Partner and a large bench of Venture Partners, and the firm has no separate portfolio page; portfolio information comes from LinkedIn announcements and press.
Investment Thesis
Althing invests in four industries it believes will drive the next industrial cycle: AI infrastructure, aerospace, energy, and robotics. The site frames the thesis as 'the durable foundation beneath artificial intelligence.' AI infrastructure means the software and physical frameworks that support the new AI paradigm, from manufacturing to deployment. Aerospace means orbital connectivity infrastructure and new AI-enabled product classes in astronautics and aeronautics. Energy means novel generation, transmission, and storage to overcome the AI energy bottleneck. Robotics means general, industrial, and defense robotics empowered by AI. The firm argues these sectors reinforce one another: compute drives energy demand, energy enables deployment, and robotics and aerospace convert intelligence into real-world leverage. It cites a projection that these four industries add over $7 trillion in market value by 2035.
The firm is explicitly infrastructure first. It does not exclude software, but says the applications it backs must be in service of infrastructure. It prioritizes technical defensibility, strong unit economics, lean operations, and technology that creates lasting competitive advantage, in industries with structural tailwinds measured in decades rather than quarters.
Stage and Check Size
Althing writes $100K to $250K pre-seed checks and $500K to $1M seed checks. It partners with technical founders at the stages where conviction matters most. The size of the fund has not been disclosed in the sources reviewed, so AUM is left blank.
Lead Tendency and Decision Process
The underwriting process on the site runs Qualify (initial fit), Connect (founder meeting), Validate (GP and VP due diligence), Commit (term negotiations), and Close. Daniel Russell is the sole General Partner and decides; Venture Partners supplement diligence committees, source deals, and advise portfolio companies. Whether the firm leads or follows is not stated. Its first investment, Extellis, was a seed round led by another investor, which suggests it writes smaller participating checks, so lead tendency is recorded as unknown.
Team
Daniel Russell is an attorney (George Mason University School of Law, former Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Law, Economics & Policy), a SaaS founder who built a business to eight-figure revenue and a team of 100, and a longtime venture LP. He was previously at Go Fish Digital for about eleven years and founded Attentiv. He describes himself as a record-setting software salesperson and award-winning digital marketer, and he has had a successful exit.
The Venture Partner network is large and domain-specific. It includes Adam Hanselman (VP, Gauge Capital, former investment banker, 50+ transactions), Dan Kim (CSO at TechInsights, former Chief Economist of the CHIPS Program Office), Eric Nielsen (EVP at SunPower, co-founder of Sunder Energy, acquired by SunPower in 2025), Jon Reifschneider (Executive Director of AI at Duke University, former NASA engineer), Ilia Kozhelskii (Andromeda Cluster, formerly SpaceX and TotalEnergies), Chris Fernando (aviation planning at VHB, advisor to the FAA, DOT and NASA), plus operators from Visa, Sound Agriculture, Slate Automotive, Kindred Motorworks, NetCraft, Conifer Technologies and others.
Recent Activity and Portfolio
Althing's first investment was Extellis, a Duke University spinout in Durham, NC building all-weather satellite imaging, which raised a $6.8M seed round in November 2025 led by Oval Park, later extended with Shell Ventures. Althing announced it as the fund's first investment, with Venture Partner Jon Reifschneider credited. The firm also announced an investment in Kunstig Aero, a Brazilian aerospace startup, per a LinkedIn post by that company's founder. Althing is also listed as a participating investor at hard-tech events such as the IEEE Hard Tech Venture Summit. The portfolio is small because the fund is new. The fund appears to be actively deploying.
Founder Preferences
The firm wants elite, technical founders building hard infrastructure with defensible technology and lean operations. Deep-tech and hardware teams, including university spinouts in the North Carolina Research Triangle, are a natural fit given the Duke ties of its Venture Partners. Warm intros are welcomed; founders can also email [email protected].
Geographic Focus
The firm is based in Raleigh, NC, with strong Research Triangle and Duke connections, but has invested in a Brazilian company and attends national events, so geography appears open.
