Amberra Research
Investment Thesis
Amberra is the corporate venturing studio of the Genossenschaftliche FinanzGruppe Volksbanken Raiffeisenbanken, Germany's cooperative banking group (around 650 local cooperative banks, DZ BANK, BVR, and Atruvia among its shareholders). Founded April 1, 2023, amberra runs three venturing motions in parallel: Venture Capital (direct equity investments), Venture Building (co-building new business models with cooperative-bank partners through to spin-out), and Venture Clienting (structured pilot partnerships that give startups access to the cooperative banking network without an equity check). The unifying goal is to move the cooperative banks "from financial partner to partner for the whole of life," extending relevance with roughly 30 million retail and business customers beyond classic banking.
Sector Focus
Investment activity is organized around four thematic "Lebenswelten" (life-worlds): Wohnen (housing/real estate), Gesundheit (health), Nachhaltigkeit (sustainability/energy), and Regionale Wirtschaft (regional economy/trades). Every portfolio company to date maps cleanly onto one of these: syte (GeoAI real-estate potential analysis) and Impleco (digital ecosystem for finding, building, buying and renovating property) sit in Wohnen; LillianCare (hybrid general-practice healthcare for underserved regions) and Gardia (AI-supported emergency call bracelet with automatic fall detection for the elderly) sit in Gesundheit; stroya and nuuEnergy (regional craft/installer networks digitizing the German heat-pump transition, "Wärmewende") sit in Nachhaltigkeit; ubiMaster (on-demand tutoring and homework help via app) extends into Regionale Wirtschaft-adjacent education access.
Stage Focus
Amberra's fund strategically targets Series A rounds — the start-up qualification flow explicitly states they invest in startups "in der Seed- und Series-A-Phase" that are already live in market and generating revenue, and every fund investment disclosed to date (Impleco, ubiMaster, LillianCare, Gardia, nuuEnergy, syte) closed as part of a Series A round.
Check Size
No fixed public check-size range is disclosed. The syte Series A was a €9M round in which amberra was lead investor alongside new co-investor NRW.BANK and returning investors Schwarz Gruppe, High-Tech Gründerfonds, vent.io and Vantage Value — implying amberra typically writes a meaningful lead or co-lead ticket within multi-million-euro Series A rounds rather than a small check.
Lead Tendency
Amberra led the syte Series A as sole lead investor, the clearest public evidence of lead capability. The firm frames itself as a "strategic investor" whose team includes former founders, offering pitch-deck feedback, capital, and CFO advisory support alongside the check.
Recent Activity
The BaFin-registered amberra Fonds was set up in March 2024, had its first closing in August 2024, a second closing around April 2025, and its final closing at the €100M target in February 2026 — funded by roughly 180 cooperative banks and FinanzGruppe entities representing more than half of the group's consolidated balance sheet. Post final-closing, amberra states an ambition to build a portfolio of up to 20 bank-adjacent and bank-independent ventures by 2028 across its three venturing fields. The fund deployed five Series A checks in its first ~18 months (Impleco, ubiMaster, LillianCare, Gardia, nuuEnergy) and added a sixth, syte, in September 2026 as its first check post-final-closing — indicating the fund is actively deploying.

Decision Process
Amberra runs a five-step process: Erstgespräch (intro call off a pitch deck) → Deep Dive Calls (business model, go-to-market, team, strategic fit) → Investmentkomitee (an investment committee that makes the final call) → Legal Due Diligence → Investment (signing and funding). The Investmentkomitee is explicitly the final decision-making body, indicating a formal committee process rather than solo-GP or informal partnership sign-off.
Founder Preferences
Amberra selects for startups already live in-market with revenue (Seed/Series A, not pre-revenue), a strategic fit to the cooperative FinanzGruppe's four life-worlds, and a business model that can plug into a network of ~650 regional banks and ~30 million customers. Several team members are former founders themselves and position that experience as a differentiator in diligence and post-investment support.
Decision Timeline
Amberra states it responds to inbound pitch decks within a week and can reach a clear decision within a month, making it a relatively fast corporate investor by CVC standards.
Geographic Focus
DACH region (Germany, Austria, Switzerland), with a clear emphasis on German regional/cooperative-bank markets; offices in Hamburg (Überseeallee 1) and Berlin (Invalidenstraße 117).
