Banter Capital Research
Investment Thesis
Banter Capital is an early-stage venture capital firm founded by Heston Berkman, who previously spent years at BoxGroup and SignalFire. The firm's name derives from its communication philosophy — engaging founders with "direct, earnest, and non-combative" honesty delivered with "wit and repartee." Banter backs founders who are "unusual, surprising, curious, and ambitious" — or as the team puts it, "the weird and the wonderful." Thematically, Banter has shown strong affinity for historically underrepresented founders, including LGBTQ+ founders, immigrant founders, and female-led companies. The thesis is as much about founder type as sector: Banter bets on people who don't fit the standard VC mold.
Sector Focus
Banter has a deliberately diverse portfolio across multiple conviction verticals:
- Defense and Dual-Use Technology: Gallatin AI (AI-powered military logistics), Deterrence (computer vision/robotics for battlefield), Antares Industries (portable nuclear microreactors)
- Aerospace and Space Infrastructure: Northwood Space (next-gen satellite ground stations), Antares Industries
- Proptech and Construction Tech: LightTable (AI-native pre-construction software)
- Biotech and Life Sciences: Barnwell Bio (poultry bio-surveillance derived from COVID-era playbook), Omen AI
- Crypto and Web3: ZeroLend (DeFi peer-to-peer lending/restaking), Nibiru Chain (proof-of-stake blockchain with leveraged derivatives)
- Enterprise Software: Muse Software (museum visitor experience tech), Podium Automation (industrial automation)
- Consumer and Ecommerce: Revive (retail returns monetization), The Lumber Manufactory
Stage Focus
Banter primarily invests at the Seed stage with selective Pre-Seed entries. Of 14 tracked investments, 11 were Seed entries and 3 were Series A (typically follow-ons into existing portfolio companies). They entered Northwood Space at Seed before a16z led the $30M Series A. Their earliest entry was a 2022 investment at Pre-Seed. This is a firm that wants to be first or second institutional money in.
Check Size
- Range: $100K – $2M

- Always co-investor, never leads
Lead Tendency
Banter does not lead rounds. They position as a high-conviction co-investor and early supporter, typically co-investing alongside firms like BoxGroup, First Round Capital, Susa Ventures, and Caffeinated Capital. They add value through introductions, fundraising support, financial modeling, and strategic guidance rather than board control.
