Basal Capital Research
Investment Thesis
Basal Capital is a pre-seed and seed fund focused on frontier technology, run by solo GP Nathan Maton. The firm's tagline is "Pre-Seed & Seed Frontier Tech." Its core belief, stated on the About page, is that the best returns in venture come from recognizing capability before it has been proven. Basal looks for what it calls persistent domain experts: founders who have already been in the arena, learned hard lessons, and are ready to go again before the market has caught up to how good they are. The firm says it does not need traction or a deck with 18 months of ARR. It wants in before the round is obvious, while the founder is still deciding whether to build at all.
Three principles are listed on the site. First, back persistent domain experts at the earliest possible stage. Second, look for founders who have to build, meaning those with a specific relationship to the problem, the craft, or the customer that makes the company feel inevitable. Third, capital is the smallest thing the firm offers: at pre-seed, the right intro, the right framing, or the right hire can matter more than the check size.
A second framing appears in the firm's Decile Access fund page: the highest-signal check at pre-seed is a second-time founder. Nathan has made 18 angel checks into repeat founders since 2021 and cites a 50.70% annualized return on them (self-reported, not independently verified). The pitch is that the best second companies are already funded by friends from the last company before anyone hears about them, and Basal exists to do that on purpose, with structure, often before a pitch deck exists.
Stage Focus
Pre-seed and seed. The firm explicitly says it is comfortable investing before a company is obvious and moves quickly when the fit is clear.
Check Size
The About page says typical checks are $25K to $100K. The fund is described as $5M, targeting 20 to 30 companies, which implies small initial positions and an emphasis on breadth over concentration. The fund page acknowledges that one outsized winner has to carry the fund.
Fund Structure
Per the Decile Access listing, Basal Capital is a $5M pre-seed and seed fund, vintage 2025, US-based, with a 2% annual management fee and 20% carried interest, and a $50,000 minimum LP check. At the time of the listing 7 of 25 LP spots were still available, so the fund was still raising. We therefore treat it as actively deploying while still closing its LP base.
Lead Tendency
Not stated. With checks of $25K to $100K and a $5M fund, Basal is unlikely to lead priced rounds and more likely to participate or write early first checks, but the site does not say. Marked unknown.
Recent Activity and Portfolio
The portfolio page lists eight current companies: BMONI (stablecoin neobank for unbanked and underbanked customers in Nigeria and Mexico), Hyperspell (memory and context layer for AI agents), Lovie (agentic launch infrastructure for AI-first founders), Unified (unified API, MCP server, webhooks, SDKs and CLI for customer integrations), Standard Cybernetics (premium services delivery partner helping enterprises deploy AI transformation work), Hey Noah (proactive AI executive assistant), Intellivisa (agentic AI platform automating global visa applications), and Epilogue (compute deal network connecting AI companies, suppliers and data centers). The page describes these as a few current portfolio companies, not an exhaustive list.
The Decile Access page also lists Nathan's earlier personal angel investments as track record: Berachain (blockchain), Hadrian (spacecraft parts manufacturing), Calm (meditation app), Rmix (medication vending machines, founded by repeat founders with a nine-figure healthcare exit), and SXD (AI for sustainable fabric manufacturing). These were angel checks, not fund investments, and are not added to the fund portfolio here. The About page says Nathan's angel portfolio includes four unicorns and two public companies.
Sector Focus
The fund page names AI, FinTech and Health as the areas where last-cycle operators are starting second companies. The actual portfolio skews to AI agents and AI infrastructure, with fintech and stablecoins in emerging markets, plus a services and compute marketplace angle. Advisors come from crypto infrastructure, which fits the stablecoin and crypto-adjacent angel history.
Team
Nathan Maton is Managing Director and solo GP. His background: led community at Google, Khan Academy, IDEO and the Bay Area startup ecosystem; co-founded a FinTech company that reached eight figures in profit by year two; co-founded CrypToadz, a consumer brand that did over $500M in secondary trading volume in a single cycle; angel investing since 2021. He describes himself as a three-time founder. Advisors are Ben Peters, co-founder of Bitso, advising on fintech, crypto and company-building in emerging markets, and Ross Middleton, co-founder of Rhino.fi, advising on crypto infrastructure, product strategy and scaling technical networks. Contact is directly at [email protected].
Decision Process
Solo GP, so decisions rest with Nathan alone. The firm says it moves quickly when the fit is clear.
Founder Preferences
Repeat founders and persistent domain experts with an evident team-market fit, who have shipped, scaled or exited before and are starting their next company. Founders with a personal relationship to the problem. Pre-traction is fine.
Geographic Focus
The fund is described as US-based, backing US repeat founders. The portfolio is not purely US: BMONI serves Nigeria and Mexico, though that is market focus, not founder location.
Gaps and Uncertainties
Headquarters city is not stated on the site. Lead tendency, decision timeline and warm-intro requirements are not stated. Stage at investment and investment dates for individual portfolio companies are not published, so none are recorded. The 50.70% return figure is self-reported.
