BEENEXT Research
Investment Thesis
BEENEXT is a founder-first, early-stage venture capital firm headquartered in Singapore, founded in 2015 by Teruhide Sato (co-founder of BEENOS and Cybercash Japan/VeriTrans). The firm describes itself as "a partnership of the founders, by the founders, and for the founders" — when a founder partners with BEENEXT, they gain access to the entire BEENEXT global community for co-creation, mentorship, and cross-market support, not just capital. BEENEXT is explicitly sector-agnostic and industry-agnostic, preferring to back bold, technical founders building category-defining companies in traditionally underserved emerging markets rather than committing to a narrow vertical thesis.
Sector Focus
While sector-agnostic in principle, BEENEXT's actual portfolio concentrates in:
- Fintech and payments (BharatPe, Akseleran, Instamojo, M2P Fintech, CitrusPay)
- Enterprise SaaS (Servify, SmartHR, ANDPAD, Zimyo)
- Consumer internet and marketplaces (NoBroker, Tokopedia, Ajkerdeal)
- Logistics and mobility (Shiprocket, Get My Parking, FleetX)
- Healthtech (Healthians, Mfine)
- AgriTech and sustainability (Blue Sky Analytics, Amartha)
- Deep tech and hardware, including a recent seed investment in aerospace manufacturing (Axirium Aerospace)
Stage Focus
BEENEXT primarily invests at pre-seed through Series A, with an initial check size range of roughly $200K–$2.5M. It also runs a dedicated accelerator-style "BEENEXT Accelerate" fund for India and Southeast Asia (led by Managing Partner Hero Choudhary) and the Japan-focused ALL STAR SAAS FUND (led by Managing Partner Hiro Maeda), which extends the firm's reach into growth-stage SaaS follow-ons.
Check Size
Typical initial investment: $200,000–$2,500,000. The firm frequently participates in or leads follow-on rounds for existing portfolio companies (e.g., Raise Financial Services' $22M Series A in January 2022, alongside Mirae Asset Venture Investments).
Lead Tendency
BEENEXT often leads or co-leads early rounds. Recent examples: led the $3.1M pre-seed round for CREST (June 2026) and co-led (with Shastra VC) the $3.5M seed round for Axirium Aerospace (November 2025).
Recent Activity
- June 2026: Led a $3.1M pre-seed round in CREST, an AI-native fractional family office and wealth management platform (India), alongside Sparrow, Shastra VC, DeVC, Warmup Ventures, Atrium Ventures, and 91 others.
- November 2025: Co-led (with Shastra VC) a $3.5M seed round in Axirium Aerospace, an Indian precision-manufacturing and aerospace supply-chain company.
- The firm remains an active investor: third-party trackers (Tracxn, as of August 2026) count roughly 270+ cumulative portfolio companies with double-digit new investments in the trailing twelve months.
Portfolio Highlights
Notable companies across BEENEXT's ~15-year history include BharatPe (fintech infrastructure for merchants), NoBroker (commission-free real estate marketplace), Shiprocket (ecommerce logistics), Trusting Social (AI-powered credit scoring), M2P Fintech / Open (banking-as-a-service and SME neobanking), Droom (used-vehicle marketplace), Tokopedia (Indonesian ecommerce, since acquired into GoTo), SmartHR and ANDPAD (Japan SaaS), and Mobile Premier League. Several portfolio companies have gone on to raise from tier-1 global investors or reach unicorn status.
Team
BEENEXT is run by a global partnership rather than a solo GP:
- Teruhide Sato — Founder & CEO. Co-founded Cybercash Japan (VeriTrans) with SoftBank in 1997 and BEENOS in 1999, taking it public on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 2004. Named a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader (2008).
- Dirk Van Quaquebeke — Managing Partner. Based in Asia since 2009; has led investments in 50+ companies including Trusting Social, Open, M2P, FleetX, and Amartha.
- Hiro Maeda — Managing Partner, leads the Japan-focused ALL STAR SAAS FUND; early-stage investor in 100+ companies including SmartHR and ANDPAD.
- Hero Choudhary — Managing Partner, leads the BEENEXT Accelerate fund for India/SEA; notable investments include BharatPe, NoBroker, and Servify.
- Nao Ito — Operating Partner; BEENOS co-founder, with BEENEXT since 2017.
- Chinmaya Saxena — Partner, Community Strategy; leads India investments and the global founder community charter.
- Anirudh Garg — Partner, India and Southeast Asia investment activity; previously Flipkart and Speciale Invest.
- Yusuke Kono — Director, Southeast Asia and India; former NHK journalist.
- Reina Takagi — Director, Japan-India/Japan-SEA strategic collaboration; previously Visional/BizReach.
- Priyank Mahajan — Investment Team, India/SEA growth-stage support; ex-Bank of America and Goldman Sachs.
- Saksham Pant — Investment Team, India; ex-Nvidia, Uber, and Athera Venture Partners.
- Jeremy Soh — Investment Team, Southeast Asia; previously Philips Ventures and Qualgro Partners.
Decision Process
Multi-partner partnership model (four Managing Partners plus a broader investment team across geographies) rather than a solo-GP or formal investment-committee structure; decisions appear to be made collaboratively within regional/vertical mandates (e.g., Choudhary for India/SEA accelerate, Maeda for Japan SaaS).
Founder Preferences
BEENEXT explicitly favors "bold ideas from brilliant people" and technical/operational founders with deep domain conviction, often backing companies very early (e.g., investing in NoBroker shortly after its office was vandalized by threatened incumbent brokers). The firm emphasizes long-term partnership, high-trust relationships, and hands-on support with talent, governance, and follow-on capital rather than passive capital.
Geographic Focus
Primarily India (more than half of the portfolio), Southeast Asia (notably Indonesia and Vietnam), Japan, and the United States. The firm has offices/teams across Singapore, India, Indonesia, and Japan, positioning it to support cross-border expansion for portfolio founders.
