BioGeneration Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
BioGeneration Ventures (BGV) is a Netherlands-based venture capital firm exclusively focused on early-stage European life sciences companies. Founded to bridge the gap between academic and pharma-originated research and investable biotech companies, BGV builds and leads seed-stage investments in innovative therapeutics companies addressing high unmet medical needs. The firm leverages deep relationships with universities, early-stage biotech companies, and large pharmaceutical partners to source, structure, and build companies around de-risked, scientifically differentiated assets rather than simply writing checks into existing deal flow. BGV frequently acts as a company-formation investor, licensing technology out of academic institutions and assembling founding teams and leadership around it.
Sector Focus
BGV invests exclusively in biotech and life sciences, with particular strength in antibody therapeutics and platform technologies, immuno-oncology, rare and metabolic disease, neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders, gene therapy, cardiovascular disease, complement biology and ophthalmology, and medical devices adjacent to therapeutics (e.g., neurostimulatory devices). The portfolio spans small molecules, biologics, RNA-based therapies, and gene therapy platforms.
Stage Focus
BGV invests from company formation and seed through early clinical development, and holds follow-on reserves to participate in Series A and selectively Series A2/B rounds of its own portfolio companies. Its FIRST fund vehicle (now on FIRST II, closed March 2026) is specifically dedicated to translating academic and pharma spin-out programs into new companies at the earliest, pre-seed stage, ahead of BGV's numbered funds (BGV I through BGV V) taking the lead seed/Series A position.
Check Size
BGV's typical initial ticket is in the roughly €250K-€1M range at seed/company formation, with meaningful reserves for follow-on participation in Series A and later rounds of existing portfolio companies (e.g., TargED's €40.4M Series A2 and Mironid's $46M Series B in 2026). Precise check-size figures are not published on BGV's own site; this range is inferred from third-party investor databases and should be treated as directional.
Lead Tendency
BGV explicitly states it "generally acts as lead investor," and its case studies confirm a pattern of leading or co-leading seed rounds (e.g., co-led argenx's 2009 seed round, sole investor in Complement Therapeutics' 2021 seed round) and frequently negotiating the underlying IP licenses itself.
Recent Activity
BGV closed BGV Fund V at €150 million in July 2023, bringing total assets under management to over €400 million, with strategic LPs including Eli Lilly, Novo Holdings, and Bristol Myers Squibb. It closed a new FIRST II fund in March 2026 dedicated to Dutch life science spinouts in chronic disease. Portfolio activity in 2026 has been active: Mironid raised a $46M Series B (August 2026), TargED raised a €40.4M Series A2 and dosed its first stroke patients (June-July 2026), Azafaros completed Phase 3 enrollment (July 2026), and Phosphoenix secured €1.3M in financing (September 2026).
Portfolio Highlights
Notable historical exits/outcomes include Acerta Pharma (AstraZeneca acquired a 55% stake in a deal valued over $7B; its drug Calquence surpassed $2B in annual sales by 2022) and argenx (IPO'd on Euronext in 2014 and NASDAQ in 2017; market cap exceeded $25B as of November 2023). The current portfolio of roughly 30 active companies includes Azafaros, Complement Therapeutics, Confo Therapeutics, Mironid, TargED Biopharmaceuticals, VectorY, Citryll, Scenic Biotech, and Synaffix, among others, spanning rare disease, oncology, neurology, and ophthalmology.

Decision Process
BGV operates as a multi-partner venture firm (two Managing Partners, a General Partner, and a bench of Venture Partners who take operational and board roles in portfolio companies), consistent with a partnership decision process rather than a solo-GP structure.
Founder Preferences
BGV frequently originates its own deals by licensing IP directly from universities and pharma R&D programs, then recruiting experienced leadership into the company, rather than purely backing pre-formed founding teams. It favors scientific founders with differentiated, genetically or mechanistically validated targets and is comfortable taking board seats and interim management roles to build out management teams.
Geographic Focus
BGV is headquartered in Naarden, the Netherlands, and invests primarily in Dutch and broader European life sciences companies, positioning itself as an "early-stage funding for European life sciences companies" specialist.
