BlackTech Capital Research
Investment Thesis
BlackTech Capital (BTC) is a Toronto-based micro venture firm founded in 2021 that invests in climate tech and cleantech companies led by Black and other underrepresented founders. Its thesis is that minority founders have an advantage shaped by grit and a different vantage point on large societal problems, and that the roughly $5-11 trillion of additional climate investment value expected by 2030 is being left on the table when diverse founders go unfunded. The firm describes its mission as accelerating the $4+ trillion transition to a profitable, sustainable economy by backing minority-led green innovations, and says it explicitly aims for venture-fund returns, not concessionary ones.
Stage Focus
BTC invests at pre-seed and seed, including early-revenue companies. The thesis page says it prioritizes founders who have already secured significant non-dilutive government capital for their research, which it treats as validation of both the science and the founder's execution. Stage evidence for individual portfolio companies was not found, so none is recorded per company.
Check Size
No check size is published. The Catalyst Fund is a small vehicle (target CAD 2M, about US$1.47M) planned to back six companies, which implies initial checks in the low hundreds of thousands of dollars at most. This is an inference and is not recorded as a field.
Lead Tendency
The thesis page states the firm leads rounds and brings in strategic co-investors (the process step is titled Lead and Syndicate). Given the fund size, it will likely lead very small rounds or fill a slice of larger ones.
Recent Activity
In late August 2026 BTC announced the Catalyst Fund with a $500,000 first close against a CAD 2M target, aiming to close before year-end. Anchor investors are Dragonfly Ventures, an Ontario impact investing family office, and BKR Capital, Canada's largest Black-led VC fund, plus several high-net-worth individuals. The fund runs through Equivesto Canada, an equity crowdfunding and angel platform, which allows minimum cheques as low as $10,000. Fee terms discussed publicly are 2 and 20 with a 7% hurdle. BTC has made four investments so far and plans two more before year-end, keeping half the portfolio women-founded. Five of the six planned companies are Canadian.
Portfolio Highlights
- Serenity Power: low-emission power from solid oxide fuel cells.
- Kiwi Charge: a mobile EV charging robot for buildings not wired for EV charging; piloting with the City of Markham, the City of Vaughan, Tridel and GM's AVO demonstration project.
- Mars Materials: named on BTC's LinkedIn page as one of the first portfolio companies, founded by Aaron Fitzgerald, Kristian Gubsch and Trey Sheridan.
The website portfolio page returned 404 and the fourth company was not identified. No exits were found.

Decision Process
The two co-managing partners run the firm. Diligence combines internal work with third-party expert review from the advisor bench, followed by lead and syndicate, board participation and post-investment support. The anchor LPs tested BTC on financial and impact diligence before committing.
Founder Preferences
Black, Indigenous, women and other underrepresented founders in climate tech with original IP, strong technical teams and a clear path to revenue. Founders with non-dilutive government funding are favored. BTC sources through Foresight Canada, Founder Institute, Techstars, Toronto Metropolitan University, the World Economic Forum's UpLink, the Canadian Black Chamber of Commerce, the University of Toronto Black Founders Network and Howard University.
Value-Add Programs
Founder Studio is an internal accelerator with sector-specific growth workshops, and Exit Lab does early-stage M&A mapping and acquirer cultivation from day one. BTC is listed on the SVX Impact Index+ and was named one of UpLink's top innovative funds by the World Economic Forum.
Geographic Focus
Canada first, with a Toronto base, though the thesis is global in sourcing. The partners say it is harder to raise capital for Black-led climate funds in Canada than the US, which is why they built it there.
Gaps
The site is a client-rendered app and most pages returned thin content. Check size, per-company stage and dates, LinkedIn URLs and the fourth portfolio company are unverified.
