BMW i Ventures Research
Investment Thesis
BMW i Ventures is the corporate venture capital arm of BMW Group, operating as an independent fund that combines the financial discipline and speed of a Silicon Valley venture firm with the strategic access of one of the world's leading automotive companies. Founded in 2011, the firm has built a clear and differentiated thesis: the technologies shaping the future of the automotive ecosystem are increasingly developed by startups, particularly in artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, sustainability, and connected mobility.
Unlike traditional corporate venture arms that primarily serve as strategic extensions of their parent companies, BMW i Ventures makes investment decisions independently, moves at venture speed, and backs companies primarily on the strength of their business fundamentals. Portfolio companies are not captive to BMW's corporate roadmap — they become stronger businesses because of the access and expertise BMW i Ventures brings.
With the close of Fund III ($300M) in April 2026, BMW i Ventures has over $1.1 billion in total capital under management across three funds and more than 90 investments. The firm has recorded over 30 exits, including 11 public companies. Fund I has returned significant capital and performed in the top quartile of venture funds.
Stage Focus
BMW i Ventures invests from Seed through Series B, writing initial checks up to $10M. The firm reserves capital for follow-on investments in high-conviction portfolio companies, with meaningful follow-on reserves built into Fund III. They will lead or co-lead rounds and also participate as strong financial investors in competitive rounds.
Check Size
Initial checks go up to $10M. Typical seed-stage checks range from approximately $500K to $2M; Series A and B checks approach the $10M initial ceiling. Total deployed capital per company often exceeds the initial check through follow-on investments.
Fund III Focus Areas
Fund III, closed April 2026 at $300M, is focused on three core themes:
- Physical AI and Agentic AI: Autonomous systems, robotics, and AI-driven production workflows where AI operates with genuine agency — making decisions and executing tasks without constant human supervision.
- Manufacturing and supply chain: AI-powered intelligence applied to production planning, process optimization, and supply chain resilience across the automotive value chain.
- Circularity and advanced materials: Decarbonization, rare earth recovery, next-generation battery materials, and resource efficiency — consistent with BMW Group's long-term sustainability commitments.
Geographic Focus
North America (primary) and Europe. Offices in Mountain View, CA (HQ), San Francisco, CA, and Munich, Germany. The team operates across both geographies with a lean but global structure.
Lead Tendency
BMW i Ventures leads and co-leads investment rounds in high-conviction deals, and also participates as a financial investor in competitive rounds. The GreenSpark investment saw BMW i Ventures leading the round. Principals typically take board seats as directors or observers at portfolio companies — Scott Walbrun holds seven board seats.
Recent Activity
Fund III ($300M) closed in April 2026, making BMW i Ventures actively deploying from new capital. Recent investments include:
- Featherless.ai (April 2026): $20M Series A in AI inference platform for open-source models, co-led with AMD Ventures and Airbus Ventures

Decision Process
Investment decisions are made by the BMW i Ventures investment team, operating with genuine independence from BMW Group's corporate planning cycles. The firm uses an investment committee structure involving Managing Partners and Partners. BMW i Ventures emphasizes that portfolio companies are not captive to BMW's roadmap — strategic value flows from the partnership, but financial and strategic independence are core operating principles.
Founder Preferences
BMW i Ventures backs founders who see a clear problem in automotive, manufacturing, or supply chain; build without constraints and can move at startup speed; have genuine founder-market fit (deep firsthand experience in the industry they're serving); and are building financially durable, category-leading businesses rather than just strategic showcases. They value technical founders with deep domain expertise.
Corporate Partner Value
Portfolio companies benefit from BMW Group access including joint development with BMW engineers, designers and researchers; direct commercial pathways into BMW as a customer or pilot partner; technical validation of new technologies in production environments; and access to BMW's global network and hosted events. Examples: Skylo has BMW Group as a strategic partner for satellite-connected vehicle services; Rive is used in BMW vehicle infotainment design; GaN Systems reached automotive qualification with BMW's support.
