British Design Fund Research
Investment Thesis
British Design Fund (BDF) is a UK-based early-stage investment fund that backs purpose-led British product design and manufacturing companies. Founded in 2016 by product entrepreneur Damon Bonser together with John Mathers (former CEO of the Design Council), David Motum, and David Kremer (co-founder of Rubik's Brand), the fund's thesis is that great physical products, protected by strong intellectual property and built by design-literate founders, can generate outsized returns while solving real consumer, health, and environmental problems. BDF invests exclusively in companies with registered IP protection and structures every deal to be SEIS/EIS eligible, giving UK angel co-investors tax-advantaged access to the same rounds.
Sector Focus
BDF is sector-agnostic within the boundary of physical product design and manufacturing, spanning:
- Health and wellness devices (diagnostics, medical consumables, assistive tech)
- Environmental and clean technology (solar, water treatment, recycling)
- Food and agriculture technology
- Consumer hardware and connected devices
- Enterprise and industrial products
The through-line is not a vertical but a product type: patent-protected, UK-designed and manufactured physical goods.
Stage Focus
BDF invests almost exclusively at Pre-Seed and Seed. Of its documented deals, the overwhelming majority are Seed-stage, with a handful of grant/prize co-investments and rare Series A follow-ons. It positions itself as an early, often first institutional check for hardware and product-design founders who are otherwise underserved by generalist seed funds wary of physical-product risk.
Check Size
Individual BDF commitments are modest and typically syndicated alongside grants and angel networks: recent disclosed checks include £190K into SmartyPlants and £180K into LabCycle (the latter alongside an Innovate UK Investment Partnership grant). Tracxn estimates an average seed round size across the portfolio of roughly $450K when combined with co-investors. BDF frequently co-invests with 40+ institutional and angel partners, notably UKRI and the British Business Bank (which committed further capital to BDF via its Regional Angels Programme in December 2025).
Lead Tendency
Mixed/unclear. Several recent deals are described as "led by British Design Fund" (e.g., LabCycle), while others are structured as one of several co-investors alongside grant bodies and angel syndicates. Given the breadth of its 40+ co-investor network, BDF likely varies between lead and participant depending on deal structure.
Recent Activity
BDF has remained active through 2025 and into 2026: it secured a fresh capital commitment from the British Business Bank's Regional Angels Programme (announced December 2025), backed SmartyPlants' £190K round for smart houseplant-care sensors (February 2026), and supported LabCycle's funding to scale its laboratory-plastics recycling system (June 2026). As of mid-2026 the fund has made roughly 6-9 new investments in the trailing twelve months, continuing a steady, actively-deploying cadence since its 2016 founding across five-plus successive seed funds.
Portfolio Highlights
The portfolio spans 47-51+ companies since inception, including Kokoon Technology (EEG-sensing sleep headphones, later partnered with Philips/TP Vision), FreshCheck (patented colour-change contamination and cleaning-verification tests), PEEQUAL (touch-free standalone urinals for events), SolarisKit (flat-pack solar thermal collectors), NUUV (UV-LED water disinfection), Flomark (visual IV flow-rate indicators), Good Boost (technology-enabled exercise for arthritis and chronic pain), Demeter Bio, EcoNomad Solutions, LabCycle, Enteral Access Technologies, Hidealoo, and SAGES. BDF has recorded at least one disclosed exit (Ktech Manufacturing, acquired).
Team
- Damon Bonser — CEO & Co-Founder. Product entrepreneur turned investor with 10+ years building design and manufacturing businesses; the operating force behind BDF's day-to-day investment activity.
- John Mathers — Chairman & Co-Founder. Former CEO of the UK Design Council with roughly 40 years of experience in brand and design; brings design-industry credibility and network to sourcing and diligence.
- David Motum — Director & Co-Founder. 30+ years at a senior level in financial publishing, events, and media (MSM International/MSM Media); contributes commercial and media-distribution expertise.
- David Kremer — Co-Founder & Director. Co-founder of Rubik's Brand Limited; brings consumer product commercialization and licensing experience.
The fund is managed in partnership with Sapphire Capital Partners, which has structured six SEIS/EIS funds for BDF since 2016, and reports a working team of roughly 15 people including four partners and supporting principals/analysts.
Decision Process
Small-partnership model: the four co-founders (CEO, Chairman, and two Directors) drive investment decisions, with Sapphire Capital Partners providing fund administration, compliance, and SEIS/EIS structuring rather than investment decision-making.
Founder Preferences
BDF backs founders building physical, IP-protected products — frequently first-time or early-career hardware/product founders who need both capital and design/manufacturing expertise, rather than purely software teams. The fund's design-industry pedigree (via John Mathers and the Design Council network) suggests a preference for founders who treat design as a core differentiator, not an afterthought.
Geographic Focus
Overwhelmingly the United Kingdom (roughly 40+ of documented investments), with minimal, opportunistic exposure to North America (Canada, US).
